Tulsa Rowers Race at Head of the Charles and Jayhawk Jamboree This Weekend
10/16/2015 11:06:00 AM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowing team will race at the Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday, October 18, in Lawrence, Kan., while three seniors will compete at the Head of the Charles on Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, in Cambridge, Mass.
At the Jayhawk Jamboree, TU will race 13 boats in four events, including the Women's 2x, Novice 4+, Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+. The Golden Hurricane will compete against Creighton, Iowa, Kansas and Kansas State in the regatta.
"The Jayhawk Jamboree is a chance for us to check in on our improvements for the fall," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "The Head of the Oklahoma was a solid result and we'd like to see if we can replicate it in Lawrence. We'll be racing some great teams so I am looking for a lot of hard strokes. It should be a great mid-fall test for the Tulsa rowers."
TU returns to the Head of the Charles for the first time since 2008. Racing a Lightweight 2x, Emalia Seto and Marissa Catalanotto will be representing Tulsa in the Championship 2x race on Saturday, while Emily Farrar will compete unaffiliated in the Club 1x on Sunday. Farrar will race unaffiliated because the decision to race the boat wasn't finalized by the July 1 deadline.
"I am really happy to see these athletes headed out to Boston this weekend," Harris said. "Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing Rodney Mott is going to be there with them to make sure that they are well supported. The Head of the Charles is an amazing race and something all rowers want to do if they can. Even though it doesn't fit in to our larger team schedule for 2015-16, we were able to open it up for these seniors in recognition of the work they have put in to our program. They were excited to do it and should represent Tulsa well."
