Tulsa Rowers Earn Gold Medals in Four and Eight at Jayhawk Jamboree

10/18/2015 5:51:00 PM | Rowing

The Tulsa rowers earned gold medals in both the Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+ races, while the Women's 2x and Novice 4+ both captured second-place marks at the Jayhawk Jamboree.  Emalia Seto, Marissa Catalanotto and Emily Farrar raced at the Head of the Charles and turned in solid performances.

"I am very happy with the day," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "We went in with the goal to win as many events as we could, but then to also have our second entries be closer to the first entries in terms of finish than they have before and I think we were able to achieve that.  Everyone was so focused today and I can't be anything but pleased with the day."

The Varsity 8+, which consisted of Marcia Vidaurri, Colleen Giesbrecht, Jennifer Casson, Maria Gearing, Sam Tober, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Skylar Luttjehuizen, Sarah Ringler and Hannah Vissers, posted a time of 15:01.68 to finish three seconds ahead of Kansas and seven seconds in front of Iowa.  The TU 'B' boat was fourth with a time of 15:18.97.

The Eights also raced in Sprints.  The Golden Hurricane 'A' boat finished first in the Heat ahead of Kansas and Creighton, was first in the semifinal against Kansas State, and was first in the Final over Kansas.

Vidaurri, Giesbrecht, Casson, Vander Hoeven and Vissers also turned in a top time of 16:16.73 in the Varsity 4+ race.  Tulsa finished with a commanding 30-second win over Iowa and nearly 40-seconds ahead of Kansas.  The TU 'D' boat was fourth, the 'B' boat sixth, the 'E' boat 13th and the 'C' boat 16th.

In the Novice 4+, Samantha Barber, Audrey Brown, Julia Herrel, Micah Gibbons and Annie Martin posted a time of 17:54.64 for second place.  TU trailed Kansas by 12 seconds, but was 23 seconds ahead of Kansas State.

The Hurricane pair of Brown and Lindsay Crute were second in the Women's 2x, 2- and 1x final with a time of 17:53.61.  Four other TU Doubles competed and earned top-20 finishes.

At the Head of the Charles, TU's Emalia Seto and Marissa Catalanotto raced their Lightweight 2x to a 16th-place time of 20:54.06.  Even though the Hurricane boat finished 16th they finished third among the collegiate crews and sixth overall among the Lightweights.

Emily Farrar competed in the Club 1x as unaffiliated and finished 10th overall in a time of 23:06.13.

"I am really proud of the women who decided to represent The University of Tulsa at the Head of the Charles," Harris said.  "There is a lot to this regatta and for them to go out and finish 10th in the Single and 16th in the Championship Double as a Lightweight 2x was tremendous."
