Tulsa Volleyball Defeats UCF in Four to Complete Weekend Sweep

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team had three players that recorded double-digit kills for the second consecutive match as they picked up an American Athletic Conference road win over UCF, 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-17), Sunday afternoon at the The Venue. This weekend, Tulsa picked up wins over both Florida schools defeating UCF today and USF Friday night, 3-1.
Junior outside hitters Erica Bohannon and Rebecca Reeve tallied 15 and 13 kills, respectively, while senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper picked up 15 kills and hit an explosive .480 percentage for the Golden Hurricane (10-10, 5-3 American). TU hit a commanding .325 percentage, with 55 kills and 16 errors on just 120 attempts, while the Knights were limited to a .195 attacking percentage (45-22-118) as they fell to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
The offensive trio has been very productive in its most recent matches. Hooper and Reeve have recorded six and five consecutive double-digit kill matches, respectively. Bohannon has continued to make her offensive presence known as she registered her 17 double-digit kills match this season.
In the initial frame, Tulsa had a .312 attacking percent on 9 kills, while UCF hit .269 with 14 kills. The contest was a stalemate at the midway point of the set with the score tied at 13-13. UCF took a four point lead making the score 17-13, before the Hurricane fought back to bring the score within two at 19-17. TU scored one more point before the Knights ended the set 25-18 taking a 1-0 match lead.
The second stanza was the most competitive as Tulsa hit an impressive .360 and tallied 14 kills as the Knights hit .387on 16 kills. Tulsa trailed early in the set with the score at 11-6, before battling back to tie the score at 15-15. The set would remain close late with tying scores at 20-20 and 21-21. The Hurricane took a vital two point lead with the score at 23-21, before Bohannon delivered a crushing kill to end the set 25-23 tying the match at 1-1.
The third set was the most convincing as Tulsa hit an astonishing .448 on 16 kills while limiting the Knights to .034 hitting percentage on 6 kills. Bohannon led TU in kills in the frame registering five kills, while Hooper was extremely effective by putting away all four attempts in the set tabbing four kills. The Hurricane led early with the score at 12-6, before extending the lead late in set to nine points with the score at 19-10. Back-to-back kills from Bohannon and senior middle blocker Nicole Newton ended the set at 25-12 giving TU a 2-1 match advantage.
In the final frame, Tulsa carried over the offensive momentum from the third set hitting a .342 percentage on 16 kills, while limiting UCF to a .094 hitting percentage on nine kills. The Hurricane a commanding lead early with the score at 14-3, and maintained the lead late in the set with the score at 19-11. Hooper delivered a huge kill up the middle to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
The Hurricane will return to the Donald W. Reynolds Center to take on Memphis at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. and Cincinnati at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25.
