Tulsa Volleyball Falls to SMU in Three

TULSA, Okla. —
The University of Tulsa volleyball team fell to SMU, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynold Center. Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 14 kills, and sophomore defensive specialist Ashton Anderson led the way defensively for TU with 17 digs.
 
Senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper tallied 11 kills, while junior libero Brooke Berryhill picked up compiled 10 digs for the Golden Hurricane (10-13, 5-6 American). TU hit a .107 percentage, with 39 kills and 26 errors on 122 attempts, while the Mustangs hit a .175 attacking percentage (35-17-103) as they improved to 20-3 overall and 10-1 in the conference.
 
"We lost to a good team. Right now, they're the best team in the league," Head Coach Ryan Wills said. "They've proved it over and over again. As far as the match is concerned, we have to do a lot better. We have to play better. I thought defensively we had a good night. We held them a lot lower than their (kills) average on the year, but offensively we didn't get the job done. We have to find ways to be a little more successful."
 
In the initial frame, Tulsa had a .238 attacking percentage on 16 kills, limiting SMU to a .176 hitting percentage with 13 kills. Tulsa led early in the set with the score at 15-12, and they maintained the lead with the score at 17-14 forcing SMU to use their first timeout of the set. The Mustangs scored five out of six points coming out of the timeout to take a 19-18 lead forcing Tulsa to take its first timeout of the set. The Hurricane tied the score at 20-20, before SMU took a two point lead at 23-21 forcing Tulsa to use its last timeout of the set. TU battled back to tie the score at 23-23, before back-to-back Mustang kills ended the set at 25-23 giving SMU a 1-0 match lead.
 
In the second stanza, the Hurricane hit .054 and tallied 10 kills as the Mustangs hit .250 on 12 kills. Tulsa trailed early in the set with the score at 10-5 and at 13-8. The Mustangs maintained the five point lead late in the set with the score at 20-15, before they extended the lead to seven at 24-17. TU went on to score one more point but it wasn't enough as SMU delivered a kill from the right side to end the set 25-18 giving the Mustangs a 2-0 match lead going into intermission.
 
In the final frame, Tulsa hit .023 on 13 kills while the Mustangs had a .108 hitting percentage on 10 kills. Bohannon led TU in kills in the frame registering six, while Berryhill tabbed six digs. The Hurricane led early in the set with the score at 13-8, before SMU battled back to tie the score at 16-16 forcing Tulsa to use its first timeout of the set. The Mustangs scored four out of six points coming out of the timeout to take a two point lead at 20-18 forcing TU to use its last timeout of the set. SMU scored five out of eight points coming out of the timeout to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
  
The Hurricane travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina at the Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
