Tulsa Rowers Medaled Six Boats at the Head of the Oklahoma

The Tulsa women's rowing team medaled six boats at the Head of the Oklahoma today on the North Canadian River in Oklahoma City, Okla.
"I was pretty happy overall," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We have only been on the water for three weeks, but the women have stepped up in terms of fitness and their ability to jump in the boats and row. The Eights did a great job, but I would have liked to have seen the Fours do better because we want to excel in all of our events, but it was a great day today. The team is in a good place and they'll continue to work hard to get where we need to be."
In the Collegiate 8+, the Golden Hurricane 'A' boat, which featured Marcia Vidaurri, Colleen Giesbrecht, Hannah Vissers, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Jennifer Casson, Emily Farrar, Skylar Luttjehuizen, Maria Gearing and Janelle Payne, finished second in their race with a time of 14:39.96, six seconds behind Oregon State. The TU 'B' boat was third with a time of 14:44.10.
"The Eights did a fantastic job," Harris said. "They raced good competition and it is always good to get ahead of our Big 12 rivals in Oklahoma and Kansas State, and show what kind of speed we have at TU."
Eva Trabucco, Giesbrecht, Vissers, Farrar and Casson turned in a time of 16:50.29 for a third-place finish in the Collegiate 4+. Tulsa's 'B' boat was seventh, the 'D' boat 13th and the 'C' boat 17th.
"The Fours did a good job, but didn't reach their goal," Harris said. "They needed to be more aggressive, but we can learn from today and work hard to improve for the next regatta."
In the Lightweight 2x, Lindsay Crute and Emalia Seto captured a second-place mark with a time of 17:57.39, while Julia Herrel and Audrey Brown were third with a time of 18:56.76.
Vander Hoeven and Payne tallied a third-place mark in the Open 2x in a time of 17:42.73, while Gearing and Luttjehuizen finished fourth just 1.25-seconds later. TU raced three more boats in the Open 2x, finishing seventh, eighth and 12th.
"The Doubles did really well," Harris said. "They are a training event for us to help the women get more repetitions, which really helped us in our Eights today."
Brown raced her Lightweight 1x to a fifth-place finish in a time of 19:39.82.
"Audrey is a really great freshmen rower," Harris said. "She wanted to row the Single and she raced a gutsy race today. She faced some great competition so for her to step up and row as well as she did was great. She is a great athlete and will help make us faster over the next four years."
