Back-to-Back: Cross Country Wins American Athletic Conference Championships

GRIMESLAND, N.C. – Senior Marc Scott won the men's individual title and senior Rachel Baptista placed third in the women's race to lead The University of Tulsa cross country teams to their second consecutive American Athletic Conference Championships Saturday morning at Lake Kristi.

This is the sixth straight conference title for the Golden Hurricane men, and the third straight conference championship for the TU women's team. Scott won The American individual championship for the second year in a row, running an 8K time of 23:28.32. Baptista finished the 6K race in 20:30.82.

Tulsa placed four of the top five finishers in the men's 8K race, and all five scorers finished among the top-11 runners. The women's team placed three of the top six runners, and all five scorers finished among the top-18 in the 6K race.

"It was awesome. I was very pleased with the (men's team) executing the race. They ran probably better than I thought they would," Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "We always expect that someone is going to step up, and we had two or three. The women's team, it came down to a dig down deep, tough race, and the young ladies really stepped up well, and we were fortunate that it fell on our side."

Scott, sophomore Ben Preisner, junior Luke Traynor, sophomore Adam Roderique, redshirt freshman Austin Del Rosso and sophomore Elijah Silva earned men's all-conference honors, while Baptista, junior Stacie Taylor, sophomore Nicole Lee and junior Clara Langley earned all-conference honors from the women's team. All five men's scorers, as well as Baptista, Taylor and Lee on the women's side ran their fastest times at TU in their respective distances.

Scott was followed closely by Preisner and Traynor, who finished second and third, in the race with respective times of 23:39.82 and 23:42.11. Roderique finished fifth in 23:55.09, and Del Rosso placed 11th with a time of 24:12.02. The Silva was Tulsa's sixth finisher, with a time of 24:35.09.

"I'm always proud of Marc," Gulley said. "He led them. We throw a lot of stuff around Marc, and I think he got the guys really riled up. He's a great leader. I'm very proud of Adam Roderique and Austin Del Rosso. We weren't sure how we would run in the four and the five holes, and they answered that question. I was very proud of them stepping up. I think the whole men's team ran a good race. They ran way faster than we thought we could on this course."

Taylor finished fifth in the women's 6K with a time of 20:40.43, and Lee followed with a sixth-place time of 20:44.74. Langley and redshirt freshman Alyssa Bolliger rounded out the scoring with 14th- and 18th-place times of 21:07.18 and 21:22.30, respectively.

"Alyssa Bolliger (really stepped up for us) " Gulley added. "I think we felt we had a solid four going into this season. Alyssa was probably our eighth runner coming into the season, and ended up performing incredibly as our fifth runner at the conference championship."

Of the team's consecutive conference championship streaks, which date to 2010 for the men's team and 2013 for the women's team, Gulley said," It's a great accomplishment, and we're really proud to have the opportunity to represent the university."

The Golden Hurricane returns to action Nov. 13 at the Midwest Regional Championships in Lawrence, Kan.
