Tulsa Volleyball Falls to UCF in Four Sets Wednesday

TULSA, Okla.— Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon registered 17 kills and junior libero Brooke Berryhill picked up 20 digs, but it wasn't enough as The University of Tulsa volleyball team lost an American Athletic Conference match to UCF, 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 21-25, 17-25), Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Golden Hurricane (14-17, 9-10 American) had a .169 hitting percentage and 45 kills, 19 errors, and 154 attempts, while the Knights (15-16, 9-10 American) recorded a .268 hitting percentage (68-23-168). Tulsa won the defensive battle picking up 75 digs, while limiting the Knights to 64 digs. The Hurricane also tallied 67 assists and held UCF to 42 assists.
In the initial frame, both teams battled early with tying scores at 4-4 and 8-8. The Knights went on to score four out of six points to take a two point lead at 12-10, and they extended the lead to five points at 18-13. Late in the set, Tulsa trailed by seven at 22-15 and they went on to score three of the final six points before UCF won the set 25-18 taking a 1-0 match lead. Bohannon and junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve picked up three kills each in the frame, while junior Trinity Alualu tallied five digs.
The second stanza was a deadlock early with tying scores at 7-7 and 9-9, before Tulsa scored four straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The Hurricane extended the lead to five points at 18-13, and they maintained that lead late in the set at 22-17. UCF battled back to bring the score within three at 23-20 forcing a Tulsa timeout. TU went on to win the set 25-22 tying the match score at 1-1 going into intermission. Bohannon picked up five kills in the set, while Berryhill tallied five digs.
In the third frame, the score was tied early multiple times at 7-7, 8-8, 10-10, and 11-11. TU took a three point lead at 17-14, before the Knights fought back to tie the score at 18-18. Tulsa trailed by three late in the set at 23-20, before UCF won the set 25-21 taking a 2-1 match lead. Bohannon picked up six kills in the set, while Berryhill tallied six digs.
In the final stanza, there were five times that the score was tied within the first ten points, and the last tie was at 8-8. Tulsa took a two point lead at 12-10, before UCF scored four out of six points to tie the score at 14-14. The score was tied one more time at 15-15, before UCF score five straight points to take a 20-15 lead. The Knight extended the lead to seven at 23-16, before going on to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
The Hurricane finishes the 2015 regular season at the Donald W. Reynolds Center when they take on South Florida at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27.
