Tulsa is looking to get closer to Bowl eligibility, while the UCF Knights are looking for their first victory as the two teams clash Saturday at H.A. Chapman Stadium with a kickoff time of 11 a.m. The game will be aired on ESPNews.
Tulsa comes into the game with an overall 4-4 record, with losses coming against teams that have combined for an overall 27-6 mark and three of them currently ranked among the nation's top-20 teams. The injury-bug has severely limited the 0-9 Knights as they lead the nation with a whopping 33 first-time starters and 47-percent of the UCF players having never played for the Knights before this season.
The last time these two teams met at H.A. Chapman Stadium was in 2012 for the Conference USA Championship as the game. The game went into overtime with Tulsa capturing a 33-27 victory and the league title.
This season the Golden Hurricane boasts one of the nation's most prolific offenses, gaining 532 yards and throwing for 348.5 yards per game to rank ninth nationally for both total offense and passing.
Tulsa's Dane Evans, who has completed 61-percent of his passes, has senior Keyarris Garrett leading the receiving corps. Evans has completed 187 passes for 2,788 yards and 15 touchdowns, while 63 of those passes have gone to Garrett for 992 yards, the fourth-most yards in the NCAA this year.
Garrett had an NCAA single-game high this year with 268 yards and three TDs against #17 Memphis on October 23. Fellow receiver Josh Atkinson had his streak of five straight 100-yard receiving games come to an end in that game by one yard. He had four receptions for 99 yards and one TD against the Tigers.
Garrett and Atkinson, both on the Biletnikoff Watch List for the nation's top receiver, saw red-shirt freshman receiver Justin Hobbs lead the receiving corps last week with 150 yards on seven receptions at SMU. Atkinson has compiled 699 yards and three TDs on 43 receptions for the year, while Hobbs has 235 yards on 20 catches.
Tulsa's ground attack has been a nice compliment to the Hurricane passing game, despite being banged up. Tulsa's top four rushers have each missed at least one game this season. Zack Langer has a team-high 631 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, while D'Angelo Brewer, after his second 100-yard performance a week ago, has gained 481 yards and two TDs for a 5.6 average per carry.
UCF brings in a defense that has a combined 26 games missed from its starters or projected starters due to injuries. The Knights defense is also extremely young with sixteen players having earned their first career starts.
Senior linebacker Domenic Spencer has a team-leading 64 tackles, including 7.5 TFLs for -19 yards, while the UCF defensive front is the most veteran group with two seniors, one junior and one sophomore in the starting lineup. Safeties Drico Johnson and Tre Neal and cornerback Shaquille Griffin headline the secondary for the Knights. Johnson has 60 tackles, while Griffin has turned in 41 tackles and returned two interceptions for 102 yards.
Like the defense, the UCF offense has a number of first-time starters. Seventeen different Knights have earned their first collegiate starts on the offense, while a total of 27 different players have started overall. The UCF offense has managed only 264 yards of total offense with 75.3 yards coming on the ground and 188.4 yards through the air, but the Knights' running game came to life last week at Cincinnati by amassing 212 yards.
Junior Justin Holman and freshman Bo Schneider have shared time at the quarterback position this year. Holman has thrown for 860 yards and four TDs, while Schneider has 534 passing yards and two touchdowns. Red-shirt freshman Tre'Quan Smith has a team-leading 34 receptions for 441 yards and two TDs, while fellow red-shirt freshman C.J. Jones leads the UCF rushers with 274 yards.
The Hurricane defense has allowed 532 yards of total offense per game this year, but has faced three of the nation's top-8 offenses, including No. 6 Memphis, No. 7 Houston and No. 8 Oklahoma. Remove those three games and Tulsa has held the remaining five opponents to a combined 429 yards per game.
Tulsa safety Michael Mudoh leads the Hurricane with 87 tackles on the year, while linebackers Matt Linscott and Trent Martin are next with 67 and 60 stops, respectively. Linscott has collected a team-high 13 tackles for -51 yards, while Martin has 11 TFLs for -24 yards. Sophomore cornerback Kerwin Thomas leads Tulsa with six pass-breakups and two interceptions, including a 31-yard TD return last week against SMU.
The Hurricane front line is led by senior tackle Derrick Luetjen, who has recorded 30 tackles and 8.5 TFLs, while fellow tackle Jess Brubaker has recorded 22 tackles, The ends –Derrick Alexander and Jeremy Smith – have combined for 41 tackles and eight TFLs.
It will be a cool morning to start off on Saturday, but temperatures will rise into the 60s with clear skies, making it a beautiful college football game day.
