Bohannon Leads Tulsa to Win Over Memphis in Four Sets

TULSA, Okla. —
Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 23 kills leading The University of Tulsa volleyball team to an American Athletic Conference road win over Memphis, 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18), Sunday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
 
Senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper and junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve both tallied 10 kills for the Golden Hurricane (12-14, 7-7 American). Tulsa hit a .267 percentage, with 57 kills and 17 errors on 150 attempts, while holding the Tigers to a .138 attacking percentage (46-24-160) as they fell to 14-13 overall and 5-9 in the conference.
 
Bohannon's 23 kills put her at 1,187 career kills which was enough to pass Kellie Culbertson (2010-13) for the number three spot on TU's career kill list. The talented outside hitter is 323 kills away from matching Kristien Van Lierop (1997-00) for the number two spot, and she is 1,338 kills away matching Tyler Henderson (2009-12) for the all-time leader in career kills for TU.
 
In the initial frame, Tulsa hit an impressive .325 attacking percentage on 16 kills, while limiting Memphis to a .114 hitting percentage with 12 kills. Tulsa took three point lead early with the score at 7-4 and 10-7, before they extended the lead late to five points with the score at 20-15. The Hurricane went on to score five out of the final nine points to end the set 25-19 taking a 1-0 match lead.   
 
In the second stanza, Memphis took an early 7-2 lead before TU battled back to bring the score within two points with the score at 13-11. The Tigers went on to take a five point lead with the score at 16-11, before the Hurricane battled back to tie the score at 20-20. Memphis took at two point lead at 22-20 forcing a Tulsa timeout. TU scored three more points coming out of the timeout, but it wasn't enough as Memphis won the set 25-23 tying the match at 1-1 going into intermission.
 
In the third set, both teams battled early with the score tied at 9-9 and 11-11. Tulsa scored three straight points to take a 14-11 lead, before extending the lead to seven points late in the set with the score at 22-15. A crushing kill from Bohannon ended the set 25-19 as TU took a 2-1 match lead. Hooper tallied three kills in the frame recording a .400 hitting percentage and junior libero Brooke Berryhill led the way defensively picking up four digs.
 
In the final frame, Tulsa continued their offensive rhythm hitting a .381 percentage on 19 kills, while limiting Memphis to a .128 hitting percentage on 10 kills. Tulsa took a four point lead early with the score at 5-1 forcing a Memphis timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Hurricane score seven out of 11 points to take a 12-5 lead forcing Memphis to use their final timeout of the set. The Hurricane had a five point lead late in the set with the score at 23-18, before kills from Bohannon and Reeve ended the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.  
 
The Hurricane returns to the Donald W. Reynolds Center to take on Houston at 1:00 p.m., Nov. 13, and Tulane at 1:30 p.m., Nov. 15.
