Lincoln, Neb.- Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 14 kills and junior libero Brooke Berryhill totaled 10 digs, but the University of Tulsa volleyball team dropped its season opener against the No.5-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 16-25), at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The Golden Hurricane falls to a 0-1 record, and Nebraska improves its record to 1-0.
The first set was the closest of the match, with tons of energy from both sides the two teams were exchanging points. There were two led changes, and six times that the score was tied in the frame. Tulsa jumped out to an early 7-4 lead as Bohannon and Rebecca Reeve had three kills each in the set. The Huskers forced the first tie of the match at 11-11. The Hurricane exchanged points back and forth until late in the stanza when the Huskers pulled away from a 21-20 lead to end the first match at 25-22.
In the second set the Huskers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, and then the Hurricane battled back to close the gap making it 8-6 Huskers leading. That's when Nebraska started to create separation taking a 17-11 lead and forced Tulsa to call a timeout. The Hurricane would continue to maintain the six point difference until the Huskers prevailed after leading 18-12 to win the frame 25-14.
The third set was very competitive early on as the score was knotted at 10-10. That's when the home team started to use momentum from the crowd support and began to separate. The Hurricane would try making one last run, closing the score to 22-15, but the lead was too much for Tulsa, who dropped the third and final set at 25-16.
Tulsa will look to improve on its record with a pair of matches tomorrow facing the Pittsburgh Panthers tomorrow at 10 a.m., and then the Grand Canyon Antelopes at 5:30 p.m.
