Tulsa Drops Match To Stephen F. Austin, 3-2, To Open Hurricane Classic

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team had three or more players in double digits kills for the third straight match, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane fell to Stephen F. Austin, 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 10-15) to open the Hurricane Classic. Senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper led the team with 19 kills, junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 18 kills, and both junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve and freshman outside hitter Emily Thorson totaled 14 kills. Tulsa falls to an overall 3-4 record, and Stephen F. Austin progresses to an overall 6-3 record.
In the initial frame Tulsa took an early 12-9 lead and extended it late to a 21-17 lead. SFA would go on to score two more points before the Hurricane ended the set 25-19 taking a 1-0 match advantage. TU hit a striking .273 hitting percentage holding the LadyJacks to a .133 hitting percentage.
In the second stanza the score was tied four times, twice within the first ten points and then the score was tied at 21-21 and 22-22. Both teams battled the whole set, but Tulsa scored three straight points from the last tie to end the stanza 25-22 taking a 2-0 match advantage going into intermission.
The third frame was the most competitive of the match with nine tying scores and two lead changes. The teams fought to the end where the score was tied at 22-22 and 23-23 before SFA ended the set 25-23. The two teams preformed great offensively recording a .278 hitting percentage for Tulsa and a .282 hitting percentage for SFA.
In the fourth stanza score was tied at 10-10 before the Ladyjacks jumped out to a 20-15 lead. The Hurricane would come within three points with the score at 22-19, and they would go on to score one more point before SFA ended the set 25-20 advancing the match to the final frame.
In the final frame the score was tied five times before the midway point where it was tied at 8-8, and that's when the Ladyjacks separated ending the set 15-10 and winning the match 3-2. SFA had a .278 hitting percentage in the final stanza limiting the Hurricane to a .045 hitting percentage.
Tulsa has a chance to improve on its record against Arkansas State at 7 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
