Tulsa Drops Match To Southern Illinois, 3-1, To Conclude Hurricane Classic

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa volleyball team had three players with double digit kills, but the Golden Hurricane fell to Southern Illinois, 3-1 (19-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-27) to conclude the Hurricane Classic. Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 22 kills, senior middle blocker Ashley Hooper tallied 15 kills, and junior outside hitter Rebecca Reeve totaled 12 kills. Junior libero Brooke Berryhill led the team defensively with 29 digs.
Tulsa falls to an overall 3-6 record, and Southern Illinois progressed to an overall 6-3 record.
In the initial frame the score was tied early at 9-9 and again later at 13-13 before SIU took a 20-15 lead. TU scored four more points before SIU ended the frame at 25-19. Hooper recorded 7 kills in the set and had a .500 hitting percentage.
In the second stanza SIU took an early 12-7 lead forcing Tulsa to call its first timeout of the set. The Hurricane fought back bringing the score within four points at 16-12, and SIU would maintain the lead late with the score at 20-15 forcing TU's final timeout of the set. TU rallied back bringing the score within three points with the score at 22-19 before SIU ended the set 25-19 getting a 2-0 match advantage going into intermission.
In the third frame the score was tied all seven times within the first ten points with the last tie at 9-9. The Hurricane took a three point lead with the score at 14-11 forcing a SIU timeout, and from that moment on TU didn't look back as they went up 20-17 before ending the set at 25-19. Tulsa had an impressive .316 hitting percentage limiting SIU to a .103 hitting percentage.
The final frame was the most competitive of the match with 16 ties and five different lead changes. Both teams battled throughout the set with the score tied at 10-10, 18-18, and at 25-25. SIU recorded back-to-back kills to end the set 27-25 and the match 3-1. Offensively both teams were effective as Tulsa had a .230 hitting percentage and SIU with a .298 hitting percentage in the set.
The Hurricane plays host to the Tulsa Invitational next weekend, Sept. 18-19, welcoming Oral Roberts, Houston Baptist, and North Texas. Tulsa faces Oral Roberts Friday at the ORU Mabee Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
