Albuquerque, N.M. –– Tulsa improved to 2-0 on the season with a 40-21 victory over the New Mexico Lobos Saturday night in front of 24,167 fans at Branch Field at University Stadium. The Lobos fell to 1-1 on the season.
The Hurricane amassed 600 yards for the second consecutive week, as two Tulsa players –Zack Langer and D'Angelo Brewer – each rushed for over 100 yards and one TD each, and Keyarris Garrett and Josh Atkinson each had over 100 yards receiving. The Hurricane rushed for 279 yards and passed for 321 yards on the night.
Langer had a game-high 139 rushing yards, while Brewer had 133 yards. Atkinson had 119 receiving yards and Garrett tallied 102 yards. Dane Evans completed 16 passes for 321 yards and two TDs.
The Hurricane defense held New Mexico to under 400 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers, the first takeaways for Tulsa this year. Tulsa scored 10 points in each quarter, while holding the Lobos to 14 points in the first period and seven points the rest of the way.
"I'm feeling great right now," Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery said. "Any time you can go on the road against a quality opponent, New Mexico, and Coach Davie and his staff. It's a tremendous staff over there, so to be able to come in here and get us a win – it's just a great team win – all 3 teams, defensively, offensively, and special teams. Coach Norwood and Coach Young did a great job making adjustments. We changed some things on what we were doing with the quarterback and the pitch guy. I thought our guys on the inside did a tremendous job stuffing the inside run stuff, so everything was happening on the perimeter. We just had to make open field tackles and play assignment football."
Tulsa took the second half kickoff 69 yards in 12 plays, but again had to settle for a field goal, as Redford Jones kicked his third of the game 23 yards to put Tulsa ahead 23-14 at the 12-minute mark of the third quarter.
The Lobos got back on track on their first third period drive marching 63 yards in six plays, in just 1:58 as Teriyon Gipson ran the final four yards for the touchdown, and with the PAT the Lobos cut the Tulsa lead to two points, 23-21, with 9:54 remaining in the third quarter.
After the Tulsa defense forced UNM to attempt a 42-yard field goal that went wide right, the Hurricane offense went 75 yards in eight plays as Brewer ran the final one yard for the touchdown to give Tulsa a 30-21 lead after the PAT.
Jones added his fourth field goal of game to give Tulsa a 12-point lead, 33-21, with 10:40 left in the contest. Langer iced the game with a five-yard run with 4:07 remaining on the game clock, as his TD capped a 63-yard, nine-play drive to give Tulsa a 40-21 lead.
New Mexico took the opening kickoff 75 yards in six plays, all on the ground, and scored on a 13-yard run by Gipson for the first score of the game. Tulsa responded less than a minute later in its quick strike offense when Evans connected on a 69-yard pass to Josh Atkinson.
Tulsa made it 10-7 on a 34-yard Jones' field goal after Evans' pass in the end zone just skipped off of Lucas' hands for a touchdown, leaving Jones to attempt the field goal to cap an 8-play, 56-yard drive.
UNM took a 14-10 lead on a 62-yard pass from Jordan to Dameon Gamblin to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive. A fake punt by New Mexico on 4th-and-3 kept the eventual scoring drive alive for the Lobos.
The Hurricane re-took the lead 17-14 at the 11:30 mark when Lucas caught his third touchdown of the season with a 42-yard strike in the end zone from Evans, capping a three-play, 58-yard drive in just 0:45.
Tulsa went 14 plays and 68 yards in its longest possession of the season that took 5:54 off the clock, but the Hurricane had to settle for a 22-yard Jones field goal. Jones put through a 31-yarder, but Tulsa got another chance to extend its drive and try for a touchdown with a UNM penalty on the first attempt. Tulsa got to the four-yard line, but had to settle for the 22-yarder by Jones, increasing its lead 20-14 with 3:56 left in the first half.
Tulsa went into intermission with a 20-14 lead and a 282 to 186-yard advantage in the first 30 minutes. The two teams combined for 353 yards and 24 points in the first quarter, while totaling just 115 yard between them in the second quarter. Tulsa's 10 points was the only scoring in the second stanza.
Tulsa travels down Turner Turnpike next week to play the Oklahoma Sooners in an 11 a.m. Saturday game that will be televised on FS1.
