Tulsa Women’s Soccer Team Earns First National Ranking in Program History

The Tulsa women's soccer team was ranked No. 19 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll, marking the first time in school history the program has been nationally ranked.

"It is a huge honor and our entire program is excited about this accomplishment, but we also know there is a long way to go and we can't be complacent or content with being nationally ranked," Head Coach Kyle Cussen said.  "We have our biggest test this weekend with two instate games, including at Oklahoma who just took #2 Stanford to overtime, and at Oral Roberts who always seem to be at their best when we play them.  It will be a tough weekend, but one that will definitely prepare us for conference play beginning next week."

The Golden Hurricane is 8-0, which is the best start in program history, and also set a school record for consecutive shutouts with a current six-game streak.

The perfect 8-0 mark is one of only three left in the country as Washington State is 6-0 and Rutgers is 7-0.  TU also ranks third nationally in shutout percentage (0.875), fourth in goals-against average (0.125), sixth in saves percentage (0.923), 16th in total goals (20), 17th in total assists (18) and 18th in total points (58).

"When Associate Head Coach Jim Rhein and I started in 2008, TU had just finished a season with only three wins, so to have four-straight double-digit wins and winning seasons, as well as earning the first ranking, we know we've come a long way," Cussen said.  "It has been a grueling process, but I feel like we've done it the right way.  It has been a gradual build so it is an exciting time for us, as well as for the program."

Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Sept. 18 at Oklahoma, and Sunday, Sept. 20 at Oral Roberts.  Both games are set for 7:00 pm.
