TULSA, Okla.— The University of Tulsa volleyball team swept crosstown rival Oral Roberts to open the Tulsa Invitational, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20) Friday evening at the ORU Cooper Aerobics Center. Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 19 kills, and junior libero Brooke Berryhill led the way defensively for TU with 16 digs.
The Golden Hurricane improved its record to 4-6, and ORU fell to 5-5. The Tulsa Invitational continues at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Saturday. The Hurricane plays Houston Baptist at 11 a.m. and North Texas at 7 p.m.
"I'm really happy with the way we bounced back from a rough weekend last weekend," Tulsa Head Coach Ryan Wills said. "We played pretty clean volleyball. It was not our best volleyball, but it was consistent enough to allow us to be successful in three sets. I'm glad we competed how we can, and we're excited try to build on that consistency tomorrow to finish out the tournament."
In the initial frame, the ORU took an early 7-2 lead forcing Tulsa to call its first timeout of the set. TU rallied back to tie the score at 13-13, and then took the lead late at 24-21, forcing an ORU timeout. Tulsa dominated the set offensively, recording a .306 hitting percentage on 17 kills, and limiting ORU to a .139 hitting percentage and 10 kills.
In the second stanza, the score was tied 10 times through the first 14 points. Bohannon delivered a kill to give the Hurricane the 15-14 advantage, which they maintained for the remainder of the set. The lead grew as large as five points at 23-18, as TU cruised to a 25-21 win. Tulsa totaled 13 kills and hit .222, while converting 63 percent of its sideouts, and ORU tallied 14 kills and hit .194 in the set.
In the final frame, Tulsa recorded an impressive .448 hitting percentage on 16 kills, while ORU hit .346 hitting percentage on 13 kills. With the score tied, 13-13, TU rallied to take a 19-15 lead and force an ORU timeout. The Hurricane went on to win the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.
