Tulsa Volleyball Defeats Houston Baptist, 3-1, in Tulsa Invitational

TULSA, Okla.—
The University of Tulsa volleyball team defeats Houston Baptist in the second match of the Tulsa Invitational, 3-1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20) Saturday morning at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Junior outside hitter Erica Bohannon recorded 22 kills, and junior libero Brooke Berryhill led the way defensively for TU with a season high 30 digs.
 
The Golden Hurricane improved its record to 5-6, and HBU fell to 7-6. The Tulsa Invitational continues at the Reynolds Center tonight as the Hurricane takes on North Texas at 7 p.m.
 
The initial frame was the most convincing of the match as Tulsa hit an impressive .379 percentage on 13 kills, while limiting HBU to a -.030 hitting percentage on six kills. TU took an early 7-2 lead forcing an HBU timeout. TU extended the lead to 14-6, and went on to end the set 25-11 off a service ace from Rebecca Reeve. The Hurricane converted all 11 sideout opportunities, while limiting HBU to 43 percent of its sideouts.
 
In the second stanza, both teams battled early with the score tied at 11-11. Tulsa trailed by three points late with the score at 21-18. HBU ended the set at 25-21 tying the match score at 1-1 going into intermission. The Hurricane had a .333 hitting percentage in the set, but it wasn't enough as HBU hit a .438 percentage.
 
In the third frame, Tulsa took an early 7-2 lead, and they preserved the lead late with the score at 18-11. HBU fought back to make the score 24-22, but it wasn't enough as Bohannon delivered a crushing kill to end the set 25-22. Bohannon recorded eight of the team's 15 kills in the frame.
 
In the final stanza, the Hurricane took an early 7-2 lead forcing an HBU timeout. Coming out of the time out TU extended the lead to 14-7 forcing HBU to call its final timeout of the set. Late in the stanza Tulsa led by three points with the score at 19-16 before pulling away to end the stanza 25-20 and the match 3-1.
