Tulsa Women’s Tennis Grabs Three Wins on First Day of ITA Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Tulsa Women's Tennis team had a strong showing on the opening day of the ITA Regionals on Thursday, grabbing three victories while dropping just two sets during their winning matches.
 
Nine-seed Rongrong Leenabanchong put in a dominant performance in her opening match against Nebraska-Omaha's Janelle Wilson, coming away with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win. Leenabanchong will play her round of 64 match at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
 
Vera Ploner followed with a shutout of her own during her first match of the weekend, defeating Maria Velazco of South Dakota State in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Ploner's second match of the weekend is slated for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
 
Martina Okalova opened up her weekend as the number 17-seed in a match against Tess Herder of Drake, dropping just two games in two sets as she advanced to the round of 64 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Okalova will play her second match of the weekend tomorrow at 1 p.m.
 
Martha Matoula played a three-set battle against 17-seed Tatiana Nikolaeva of Kansas, taking a tightly contested opening set that saw Matoula win in the tiebreak 7-6 (4). The second set would see another tiebreak, but this time Nikolaeva extended the match with a 7-6 (5) win before taking the third from Matoula, 6-3.
 
Mahitha Dadireddy took on ninth-seeded Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum of Kansas in the final Tulsa match of the evening, falling in two sets 6-3, 7-5.
 
Play at the ITA Regionals in Minneapolis will continue tomorrow as doubles play begins followed by the singles round of 64.
