MADISON, Wisc. – Senior Luke Traynor finished 11th in the men's 8K race to lead the No. 26 Tulsa men's cross country team to a 13th-place finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Friday afternoon at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The women's team placed 25th in the 6K race.
Traynor was the top finisher for Golden Hurricane with a time of 24:04.6. The team totaled 367 points and finished ahead of seven higher-ranked opponents among the 30 teams in the race. Four of the five TU scorers finished in the top-100 of the 207-runner field.
Senior Clara Langley led the Tulsa women's side with a 74th-place finish in the 6K race. She turned in a time of 21:08.6 to pace the Hurricane to a 602 score in the 31-team and 211-runner field. This was just the second meet of the season for Tulsa's top runners, which also competed at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 24.
"This was our second race, and it was a big race," Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "The field was really quality and there wasn't really anybody that was weak. Everybody was quality. The guys had a solid run, and it was something that we can build on. I think the girls weren't able to get out in the field, and maybe training had them a little bit off. But they have a goal. SMU ran well, so they know they have a big job ahead of them to challenge (at the conference championship)."
Junior Ben Preisner, running in his first race of the season, and senior Henry Pearce each turned in top-75 finishes for the Hurricane. Preisner ran a 24:43.0 to place 61st and Pearce ran 24:49.7 to come in 71st place. Junior Adam Roderique finished 95th with a time of 24:59.2, and sophomore Isaac Dobos placed 129th with a time of 25:18.4 to round out the TU scoring.
Senior Stacie Taylor followed closely behind Langley with an 86th-place finish and a 6K time of 21:16.3, while senior Olivia Lopez ran 21:42.9 to finish 125th. Junior Nicole Lee finished the race in 21:50.3 to place 141st, and freshman Adrena Mazzei finished 176th with a time of 22:21.7.
The Golden Hurricane will next run at the American Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 29 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"Training the next two weeks is big," Gulley said. "Something they all look forward to is the conference meet, going to Cincinnati. Both teams realize they will have to improve a little bit to go to nationals. It's something that's attainable, but they are just going to have to keep improving."
