Tulsa Wins All Four Races on Sunday at Head of the Oklahoma
10/2/2016 1:15:00 PM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowers won all four events they raced in, including the Collegiate 1x, Open 2-, Open 4+ and Open 4x, on Sunday morning at the Head of the Oklahoma regatta on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.
"It was a really good way to start the season," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "As coaches we're really pleased, not just with the results, but with the way the team approached racing. We've been trying to make changes in our technical pieces and style and it is starting to take hold. We also had a lot of young rowers step up and make our team faster from beginning to end. The teams' effort really showed in the results, which we've been talking about this season. We'll see a lot of these teams again, so we want to keep moving forward and getting faster as those other teams also improve."
Jennifer Casson got the ball rolling for TU as she turned in a time of 17:16.74, more than a minute faster than UMass' second-place time of 18:28.26. Elisa Vandersloot was third for the Golden Hurricane with a time of 18:40.60.
Maria Gearing and Hannah Vissers raced the Open 2- to a top mark in a time of 17:17.86, while Colleen Giesbrecht and Bayley Macdonald were second with a time of 17:39.62. Lauren Vander Hoeven and Veronique Ulrich were third, while Madeline Lyons and Lauren Turner combined for a fourth-place finish.
In the Open 4+, Eva Trabucco, Macdonald, Giesbrecht, Ulrich and Lyons captured a gold medal finish in a time of 16:11.14, while the Hurricane 'B' boat was second.
Tulsa swept the Open 4x event, as Casson, Vander Hoeven, Gearing and Vissers won the race in a time of 15:13.69. TU's 'B' boat was second and the 'C' boat finished third.
Tulsa returns to action on Sunday, October 23 in the Jayhawk Jamboree. The regatta will take place in Lawrence, Kan.
