TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa Volleyball team was defeated by Temple University in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) on Friday afternoon in the Reynolds Center. The Hurricane (13-4, 2-3 AAC) attack was led by senior outside hitter Erica Bohannon, who moved into sole possession of second all-time on Tulsa's career kills list with 1,522, surpassing Kristien Van Lierop's (1997-00) mark of 1,510.
Bohannon's first two swings of the afternoon connected as Tulsa owned a 2-1 lead in the first before Temple took a 4-3 lead and never relinquished their advantage through the remainder of the set as they took it 25-21. Three straight Hurricane points behind kills from Bohannon and Rachel Moore brought TU within one at 12-11. Temple used a 3-0 run of their own to go ahead by four, eventually extending their lead to five after Tulsa pulled within two at 17-15 on back-to-back Owl errors. The Hurricane responded once again, pulling within two for the final time in the set at 22-20 after scoring four of the next five points prior to a Temple set-securing run.
The Hurricane grabbed a 6-2 advantage in the second set after a Bohannon kill and Temple attacking error before four consecutive Owl scores knotted the set at 7-7. Jaime Rahilly helped the Hurricane regain a one-point advantage after Temple went ahead by one and Bohannon followed suit by putting Tulsa ahead at 12-11, the final TU lead of the set despite tying the set up at 14-14. Temple scored the next seven of nine points to take a 21-16 lead on their way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match and the set 25-20 heading into halftime.
Tulsa would not go away easily in a third set that saw 11 ties and four lead changes, jumping out to another early lead as they went ahead 6-3 after a pair of Owl errors. Temple took their first lead of the set after an Izzy Rapacz kill to go ahead 9-8 before Trinity Alualu converted on a kill to knot the set. Tulsa continued to respond to the next three Temple conversions before eventually taking a 13-12 after a Rebecca Reeve and Moore block followed by two Alualu kills that would put the Hurricane up 14-13. Temple's Tyler Davis helped the Owls regain the lead at 16-15 before extending it to two at 18-16. Tulsa pulled within one twice more and again with a 3-0 run to bring the score to 23-22. Two straight Owl points would end the set and match with a 25-22 Tulsa loss.
The Hurricane will continue their conference home stand on Sunday when they take on UConn at noon in the Reynolds Center.
