Erika Wakefield had a team-best 18 points, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 76-68 decision to crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Thursday night in the PSO Mayor's Cup at the Mabee Center on the ORU campus. The Golden Hurricane fell to 1-2 on the season, while the Golden Eagles moved to 1-2 overall.
"It is disappointing because our coaches worked really hard to come up with a game plan," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We knew exactly what they were going to do, but we had guys that didn't buy in to what we wanted to do defensively so therefore we couldn't stop them. I'm just disappointed that we didn't do the things we needed to do. We just have to go on and get better from here."
Crystal Polk added 11 points while Tatyana Perez scored 10. Liesl Spoerl had a team-leading seven rebounds and Wakefield had three steals.
Tulsa shot 37-percent from the field, including 22-percent from three-point range and 80-percent from the charity stripe, compared to ORU's 47-percent from the field, 21-percent from behind the arc and 63-percent from the free throw line.
Both teams had 28 points in the paint, while the Hurricane had a 16-12 advantage in points off turnovers, an 11-6 lead in second chance points and a 25-10 advantage in points off the bench. TU also had a 42-39 lead in rebounds, a 12-9 advantage in assists and a 7-6 lead in steals.
ORU jumped out to an 11-3 lead with 4:57 on the clock in the first frame, as TU hit just 1-of-6 to start the game. The Golden Hurricane went on a 9-2 run to pull to within one, 13-12, with 3:17 to play in the first quarter and the two teams traded baskets to give the Golden Eagles a 17-16 lead at the end of the first period.
Perez hit a three-pointer with 8:31 on the clock in the second quarter for the first tied score, 19-19, of the game, but ORU pulled ahead once again and held on to a three-point advantage at the break, 32-29.
Spoerl hit a three-point basket to start the second half to tie the game at 32-all. The score was tied again at 34-34, but Perez hit a three-pointer at the 7:11 mark to give the Hurricane their only lead of the contest (37-34).
ORU took back the lead, 41-39, with 5:30 left to play in the third quarter and outscored TU, 18-11, to close out the quarter with a 59-50 advantage.
Tulsa outscored Oral Roberts in the final frame, 18-17, but the Golden Hurricane couldn't overcome the deficit to drop a 76-68 decision to the Eagles.
ORU was led by four players in double figures, including Lakota Beatty (19), Maria Martianez (16), Faith Ihim (15) and Kaylan Mayberry (10). Jordan Gilbert had a team-best 11 rebounds.
Tulsa will return to action in the home opener on Sunday, November 20 against South Dakota. Game time is set for 1:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
