Tulsa Volleyball Falls in Five Sets on Senior Night to Memphis

11/18/2016 9:53:00 PM | Volleyball

TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa Volleyball team held a 2-1 lead in their senior night match against Memphis on Friday evening at the Reynolds Center, but wound up falling in the fifth set (19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12) after two rallies to pull within striking distance.

Erica Bohannon led the Hurricane attack with 20 kills, hitting the mark for the sixth time this season, while Rebecca Reeve and Emily Thorson both reached double-digit kills.

The Hurricane (18-12, 7-11 The American) fell behind 10-5 early in the first as Memphis (14-15, 6-11 The American) hit .308 in the early moments of the match, eventually taking a 14-6 lead. Tulsa put together an 8-0 run to knot the set up, capped off by a Reeve and Jaime Rahilly send back, one of 13 total Hurricane blocks on the evening. The Tigers would score five of the next six to take control of the set the rest of the way.

Tulsa responded by dominating the second set and third sets defensively, never surrendering the lead as they took a 2-1 advantage in the match. TU used a 6-0 run in the second to reach set point after Rahilly recorded one of her five kills before coming up with a solo block in an eventual 25-17 win. The Hurricane headed into the break with 47 digs, 17 from Brooke Berryhill who led TU with 24, marking the 16th time this season that the senior reached the 20-digs mark.

TU finished with 100 digs on the evening, as Taylor Horsfall, Ashton Anderson, and Mariah Pardo all had over 10 while Reeve tallied 23 to complete her 13th double-double on the year.

Memphis pulled within two three times down the stretch in the third before eventually coming within one of Tulsa's lead. Two Tiger errors put TU ahead by three, enough for the Hurricane to hold on in a set that saw five players record more than one kill while hitting .286.

The Tigers used a 4-0 run in the fourth to go ahead 15-10 in a set where they never trailed despite a late push from Tulsa. The Hurricane put together a string of three straight blocks to bring the score to 23-22 before falling 25-23.

Tulsa fell behind 5-1 in the match-deciding fifth before pulling within one point four times, eventually tying things up at eight on a Reeve kill. After going down three, Bohannon's 20th kill of the evening followed by a combined block with Rachel Moore knotted the set at 12-12, but Memphis would score the next three on their way to taking the match.

The Hurricane will wrap up American Athletic Conference play on the road as they head to UConn to take on the Huskies Wednesday at 7 p.m.
