Basketball to Host Northeastern State in Exhibition Monday

TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa basketball team will play host to Northeastern State at 7 p.m. Monday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in its final exhibition tune-up before the 2016-17 season.

The Golden Hurricane defeated Oklahoma Christian in its first exhibition on Wednesday, 72-53. In that game, junior forward Junior Etou led the Hurricane with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and junior guard Jaleel Wheeler tallied 14 points. Sophomore guard Sterling Taplin tallied 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, junior forward TK Edogi recorded 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and freshman forward Martins Igbanu put up eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

This will be the 20th meeting between Tulsa and Northeastern State. Tulsa leads the series, 15-4. All previous 19 meetings have come in the regular season, and this is the first exhibition contest between the schools. The Golden Hurricane won the last meeting, a 67-44 TU win at the Reynolds Center. The teams first played in the 1924-25 season, when TU won all four meetings. The Hurricane has won five in a row against NSU, dating back to the 1977-78 season. The Riverhawks last won in 1941-42, 26-20, and TU won 44-17 in 1939-40. The teams played 12 times between 1924-25, and Tulsa won nine of those contests.

After Monday's exhibition finale, the 2016-17 season officially begins on Friday, Nov. 11 against Jacksonville State at the Reynolds Center.
