Ashley Clark had her 12th career double-double to lead Tulsa to a 44-28 win over Houston on Wednesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. TU moved to 9-15 on the season and 6-7 in American Athletic Conference play, while Houston fell to 5-18 overall and 1-11 in the league.
"I am just glad we came out on the winning end," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We shot 31-percent, score 44 points and we win. They flat out missed shots just like we flat out missed shots. We struggled, but we still have to feel good because we were able to come up with the win."
Clark had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Kelsee Grovey added 11 points and seven boards, and Crystal Polk had eight points and 10 rebounds. Jordyn Holmes also scored seven points, while Te'era Williams had eight rebounds, Clark had four assists and Polk had two blocks.
Tulsa had a 48-43 lead in rebounds, an 8-0 advantage in assists and a 4-1 lead in blocks, while Houston had a 7-4 lead in steals.
The Golden Hurricane shot 31-percent from the field, 20-percent from three-point range and 57-percent from the free throw line, while the Cougars shot 16-percent from the field, including 16-percent from behind the arc, and 58-percent from the charity stripe.
Houston was led by Jacqueline Blake with 12 points, while Serithia Hawkins had 12 boards.
Tulsa came out in the third quarter and started the same way as the first, missing their first five shots, but fortunately for the Golden Hurricane the Cougars were 1-of-8 in the first five minutes for a 21-20 score with 4:58 remaining in the frame. Clark hit a three at the 2:34 mark and Erika Wakefield hit a jumper 20 seconds later for TU's first points in the third period to give the Golden Hurricane a 26-20 lead. Tulsa had a 30-23 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Tulsa inched ahead to take a game-best 16-point lead to end the game. TU had a game-high 14 points in the final frame, while being held to just nine points each in the second and third quarters.
After missing their first five field goal attempts, Wakefield hit a jumper that gave Tulsa a 3-2 lead at the 7:27 mark. A three-pointer by Grovey and a jumper by Williams put Tulsa up 8-2 at the 6:15 mark, but both teams went scoreless until Alecia Smith hit a three-pointer with 2:03 on the clock to make the score 8-5. The Golden Hurricane had a 12-8 advantage at the first quarter break.
The Cougars battled back to tie the score at the 8:31 mark in the second frame as Jacqueline Blake hit a three-pointer to make the score 14-all. TU put together a 5-0 run for a 19-14 lead with 5:46 left to play in the first half, but UH pulled to within two, 19-17, with 1:19 on the clock. The teams traded baskets in the final minute as TU took a 21-18 advantage into the break.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes, as Tulsa shot 29-percent from the field, including 18-percent from three-point range, and 25-percent from the free throw line, while Houston shot 23-percent from the field and 50-percent from the charity stripe.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, February 13 against UCF. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Reynolds Center.
