Watson and Withee Named American Athletic Conference Softball Players of the Week

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa sophomore pitcher Emily Watson and junior outfielder Maddie Withee were named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday.

The duo led the Golden Hurricane to a 5-0 weekend at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio. Watson went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and posted 26 strikeouts in 12.0 innings, while Withee batted .450 and drove in 11 runs at the plate.

Watson, a native of Edmond, Okla., went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and tied the Tulsa single game strikeout record against UTSA. She struck out 17 batters in a 7.0-inning complete game two-hit, one-walk gem against the Roadrunners. Friday, Watson struck out nine batters in a 5.0-inning shutout win over North Dakota. For the weekend, she averaged 2.7 strikeouts per inning, and 26 of the 36 outs recorded in her two outings were by strikeout.

Withee, a native of Arlington, Texas, went 9-for-20 at the plate, and added three runs, a double a home run, a stolen base, and a .650 slugging and .450 on-base percentage. She went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run vs. Virginia, and then went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run vs. North Dakota. She was 2-for-4 with two RBI vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and then doubled home three runs vs. UTSA on Saturday. On Sunday, singled and had an RBI vs. UTSA.

This is the first American Athletic Conference weekly honor for Watson and Withee, and the first awards of the season for the Golden Hurricane.

The Golden Hurricane plays at the Texas Invitational this weekend in Austin, Texas. TU opens the tournament Friday against Weber State at 9 a.m., and Texas at 2:30 p.m.
