
Tulsa Drops 83-79 Overtime Contest at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Shaquille Harrison and James Woodard each recorded a double-double, and Pat Birt led Tulsa with 22 points, but the Golden Hurricane fell at Temple, 83-79 in overtime, Thursday evening at the Liacouras Center.
Harrison tallied 20 points and 11 rebounds and Woodard finished with 18 points and 10 boards, and Birt knocked down five 3-pointers. The Golden Hurricane fell to 14-8 overall and 6-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Owls improved to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in league play. Quenton DeCosey scored 21 points and Obi Enechionyia had 17 points to lead the Owls.
Temple's Devin Coleman made a 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 70-70 and force overtime. The Owls outscored Tulsa 13-9 in the extra period to win. The Hurricane led by 12 points, 49-37, with 9:55 remaining in the second half, and by five with :25 left before Temple tied the score.
Tulsa shot 43 percent for the game, including 47 percent in the second half and overtime, and made 8-of-26 3-pointers and 11-of-14 free throws. The Hurricane had a 45-44 advantage in rebounds, and tallied 16 assists on 30 field goals. Temple shot 42 percent for the game, made 11-of-30 threes and 14-of-23 foul shots.
The game was tied at 27 at halftime, but the Golden Hurricane began the second period with a 15-3 run to open up a 42-30 lead. Temple cut the lead to 49-44 at the 8:32 mark, but Tulsa responded with a 3-pointer by Birt. When the Owls cut it to 55-50, Woodard came back with a trey to extend the advantage back to eight points. A three by Enechionyia made the score 58-56, but Birt again responded with a trey to extend it back to 61-56 with 4:37 left.
Temple then used a 5-0 spurt to tie the game at 61 apiece with 2:21 to play, but a Birt 3-pointer put Tulsa back in the lead. The Hurricane led by five, 68-63, after a pair of Woodard free throws with :35 left, and 70-65 after two foul shots by Rashad Ray with :25 remaining. A tip-in by Jaylen Bond and Coleman's 3-pointer in the final seconds sent the game to the extra period.
The teams alternated the first three baskets of overtime as Temple took a 74-72 lead. Birt knocked down a three to put the Hurricane ahead, 75-74 at the 3:17 mark, but the Owls then scored four straight points outscored Tulsa 9-4 for the remainder of overtime.
Temple scored the first four points of the game, but Tulsa tied it, 10-10, on a Rashad Smith three-point play at the 14:52 mark. Harrison and Smith combined to score Tulsa's first 10 points. The Owls then took a 15-12 lead, but Harrison scored back-to-back layups to put the Hurricane ahead, 16-15. Harrison had 10 points after that layup with 10:38 to go in the first half.
The teams traded the lead in a back-and-forth first period until Temple used a 7-0 run to move ahead, 25-20 after a 3-pointer by Josh Brown. Tulsa followed with a 3-pointer by Birt and a layup by Harrison to tie the score, 25-25 with 4:17 left in the half. A layup by Brown at the 2:13 mark, and a Woodard layup at the 1:50 mark left a 27-27 tie at the intermission.
The Golden Hurricane returns home to play Houston at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
