TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore pitcher Emily Watson pitched all seven innings to lead The University of Tulsa softball team to a 4-3 road win over Arkansas on Wednesday night at the Bogle Park.
Watson registered an impressive eight strike outs, and she gave up seven hits. She threw a total of 136 pitches and 91 of those were strikes. The talented pitcher picked up her sixth win of the season.
The Golden Hurricane (18-5) recorded four runs on five hits and three RBI's, and two of those runs scored came from Maggie Withee.
The first two innings were a pitching battle as there were only two hits recorded between the two teams. Tulsa began to find an offensive rhythm in the top of the third as Kaitlin Allen started off the inning with a huge triple to right field. Maggie Withee came to the plate an out later and doubled down the left field line, which was enough to score Allen. Morgan Neal grounded out to the third baseman next, which was enough to advance Withee to third and a throwing error by the first baseman allowed her to score. The Hurricane picked up two runs and two hits on error.
In the fourth inning TU picked up one hit, and held Arkansas to zero hits.
Arkansas picked up three runs and three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. TU bounced back in the top of the sixth inning recording one run and one hit. Julia Hollingsworth picked up a big single through the left side early in the inning that put runners on first and second, before back-to-back batters were walked which drove in the tying run. The Hurricane played solid defense in the bottom of the sixth inning not allowing any run, hits or errors.
Maggie Withee was walked on four straight balls to start the inning, before she advanced to second on a passed ball. The next pitch Morgan Neal singled up the middle driving in Withee to take a 4-3 lead. TU had two more batters that were walked, but two force outs and a fielder's choice would end the inning. Neal's hit would end up being the game winning hit as the Hurricane held the Razorback to zero runs on two hits and zero errors in the bottom of the seventh.
The Hurricane travels to Lawrence, Kan., on Friday, March 18, to take on Saint Louis and UMKC in a double-header.
