The Tulsa rowers won three of four races against Kansas State in a duel on Saturday morning on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla. The Golden Hurricane picked up top marks in the Varsity 4+, Second Varsity 4+ and 3rd Varsity 8+ races, while the Wildcats won the Varsity 8+ event.
"We raced a very solid race against a very good competitor in Kanas State," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We always have tough competition with them and today was no different. Add in the head wind and I am very pleased that the women stepped up and won three of those races. Coach Patrick Sweeney has a good squad so it is great to have them down here for spring break and race them today."
"We were also able to christen a boat after Clarice Adams, our longtime bus driver. She has done a fantastic job for TU transportation and we were excited to christen the Pair to honor her and all her hard work."
Sam Barber, Emalia Seto, Madeline Oleksiak, Annie Martin and Audrey Brown turned in a time of 9:14.2 in the Varsity 4+ race, topping KSU's time of 9:38.1 by nearly 24 seconds.
In the Second Varsity 4+ event, Tulsa's 'A' boat, which featured Betsy Govig, Lauren Turner, Sarah Palilionis, Alexandra Griffith and Kristin Palilionis, claimed a top mark in a time of 9:30.8. The Kansas State boat was second (9:51.1) and the Hurricane 'B' boat was third (11.44.6).
TU's Lightweight 8+ captured a top mark with a time of 8:08.3, followed by Kansas State's 3rd Varsity 8+ (8:27.8) and Tulsa's 3rd Varsity 8+ (8:48.7).
In the Varsity 8+, Kansas State earned a top time of 8:03.5 for a five-second win over the Tulsa 'A' boat (8:08.1). The Hurricane 'B' boat was third with a time of 8:11.2, while the KSU 'B' boat was nine seconds behind that time for fourth place.
Tulsa will return to action on March 26th as they host MIT and Creighton on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla. The regatta is set to begin at 8:00 am.
"Today put us in a good position for next weekend because we know the MIT Lightweights and our Lightweights have been very close the last few years so it will be great to see," added Harris.
