After an 11-day break, the Tulsa football team was back on the practice field today for the eighth workout of the spring season. Tulsa was last on the field on Thursday, March 10 before leaving for spring break.

"It showed that we had an 11-day layoff. We had good energy early. I didn't think we lacked effort, it was just that we got tired today. We'll be better tomorrow," said Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery. "I think the retention was good. With so many young guys they're rusty on some things, but some of that is just being young. Getting into the video room tomorrow and being able to study and go from there will help them.

Montgomery is still looking to accomplish a lot in the final seven spring practice sessions.

"We have good competition in some spots. I want to see some of the young guys continue to keep stepping up. I thought our secondary made some good breaks and young guys made some plays down the field," said Montgomery. "We're still making some critical errors at the line of scrimmage, but we're athletic and fast enough now that we're able to recover from some of those things."

"I want to continue to see the young guys grow, especially in the defensive secondary, and then we have to be more consistent on both sides of the ball up front," added Montgomery.

Tulsa went into the spring with little depth on the offensive front.

"Offensive line is doing okay right now," said Montgomery. "We're a little banged up and we really don't have many numbers up front, so they're getting a lot of work, but on the top of that they're getting pretty gassed. We have to make sure we're balancing out what we want to do from a tempo standpoint and not just wearing them down."

Tulsa will be back on the field Wednesday, Friday and Saturday of this week.
