Tulsa’s Varsity 8+ Earns Gold Medal at Knecht Cup

4/10/2016 4:55:00 PM | Rowing

Tulsa's Varsity 8+ earned a gold medal, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ finished sixth overall at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J.

Maria Gearing, Hannah Vissers, Lauren Vander Hoeven, Ashley Lane, Hannah Emnett, Sam Tober, Emily Farrar, Jennifer Casson and Marcia Vidaurri raced the Varsity 8+ to a gold medal finish with a time of 6:48.61 in the Grand Final, topping second-place Boston College by nearly three seconds.  The TU boat also tallied a top mark in the Semifinal earlier in the day.

"I am pleased with the way the Varsity 8+ executed today," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "I feel really good about the way they took on this challenging race.  It was well done."

The Golden Hurricane's 2nd Varsity 8+ posted a top time of 7:01.37 in the Semifinal and then finished sixth overall in a time of 6:58.06 in the Grand Final.  Massachusetts recorded the fastest time of 6:47.17, followed by Kansas, Boston College, Wisconsin LWT and UConn in the final.

"The 2nd Varsity 8+ had a really good race, but it is always tough to finish sixth," Harris said.  "They raced hard to make the Grand Final, which was important to do in this field of teams, but now we have to go back and work on making all of the boats faster."

In the Lightweight 8+ event, TU was fourth in the Heat in a time of 7:03.42 and fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 7:08.26.

"The Lightweight 8+ has had a few challenges the last few weeks with injuries, but they were able to work the race plan," Harris said.  "I think this race experience will help them as we move forward."

Lauren Turner, Chaselyn Ruffaner-Hanson, Alexandra Griffith, Adrianna Catalanotto and Elizabeth Natho raced Tulsa's 2nd Varsity 4+ to a top time of 7:55.60 in the Petite Final, crossing the finish line nearly three seconds ahead of conference foe UConn.

TU's Varsity 4+ finished sixth in the Petite Final in a time of 7:53.55.

"It was nice to see the 2nd Varsity 4+ win their race, but the biggest thing for the Fours this weekend was the learning experience and growth," Harris said.  "I was proud of the way they fought through the conditions yesterday and were able to do a good job today."

TU returns to action next Saturday as they host SMU in the annual Lawless Cup in Catoosa, Okla.
