Tulsa to Host Lawless Cup on Saturday
4/14/2016 1:58:00 PM | Rowing
The Tulsa rowers will host the 10th Annual Lawless Cup beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 16 at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest on the Verdigris River in Catoosa, Okla. The Golden Hurricane will take on Central Oklahoma and SMU in the regatta, which features four races, including the Varsity 4+, 2nd Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+.
"We are really excited to be hosting the Lawless Cup at home this year," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "It's turned into a big rivalry race between us and SMU and both schools rise to the occasion. We are also pleased that UCO wanted to join us for this year's regatta. UCO is a tremendous team. They are currently ranked #2 in the country for NCAA Division II and have been to the NCAA Championships multiple years. UCO represents the high level of competition that all of the rowing teams in Oklahoma bring to the table. It should be great racing this weekend with good weather, and I look forward to seeing all of the fans on the banks of the Verdigris River."
After the regatta, TU will honor seniors Jerusha Blankenship, Marissa Catalanotto, Madison Crane, Hannah Emnett, Emily Farrar, Betsy Govig, Ashley Lane, Sarah Ringler, Kaitlyn Schneider, Emalia Seto, Leah Suleski and Sam Tober.
The Lawless Cup Regatta was established in 2005 to recognize the outstanding contributions that TU President Emeritus Dr. Robert Lawless and his wife, First Lady Emeritus Marcy Lawless, made toward the success of the Tulsa women's rowing program. Since the inception of the Lawless Cup, TU has gone undefeated in Cup races, bringing home the trophy in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The official Lawless Cup is presented to the winner of the Varsity 8+ race. In the first five years, TU defeated Creighton, however the 2012, 2013 and 2015 Lawless Cup regattas were against SMU, while the 2014 regatta was won against both Creighton and SMU.
