Tulsa Softball Completes Weekend Sweep Defeating East Carolina, 11-3, Sunday Afternoon

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team completed a weekend sweep by defeating American Athletic Conference opponent East Carolina, 11-3, Sunday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex.

The Golden Hurricane improves to 26-7 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the East Carolina Pirates fall to 18-21 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Watson picked up her second win of the weekend, striking out six batters and giving up just three hits. She pitched four innings for Tulsa and threw 51 pitches. Watson improves her season record to 9-6. Senior Caitlin Sill came in to pitch in the top of the fifth inning, and faced five batters and threw 14 pitches.

Watson and the Hurricane defense came out strong in the top of the first inning giving up zero runs, one hit and zero errors.

Tulsa went three up and three down offensively in the bottom of the first inning picking up zero hits and zero runs.

To lead off the top of the second inning, East Carolina's Ali Ramirez homered to left field to take a 1-0 lead. Watson gave up one more hit in the inning, before the Tulsa defense recorded three straight outs to end the inning.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, senior Jodi Edmiston crushed a double to right field to score all three base runners, giving Tulsa a 3-1 lead. Junior Maggie Withee hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to center field that allowed Edmiston to score from third base extending the Hurricane lead to 4-1. Freshman Morgan Neal grounded out to the first baseman to end the inning.

The Tulsa defense and Watson were solid in the top of the third inning allowing no hits, runs nor errors.

Freshman Julia Hollingsworth reistered TU's only hit in the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field. Tulsa picked-up no runs and left two runners on base to end the inning.

To lead off the top of the fourth inning, Watson picked up back-to-back strike outs before senior catcher Catherine Horner caught a foul fly ball behind the plate.

The Hurricane exploded offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs on just three hits. With the bases loaded, East Carolina walked Horner which scored freshman Tori Stafford from third base to give TU a 5-1 lead. Maddie Withee reached first on a fielder's choice, which allowed her sister Maggie Withee to score giving Tulsa a 6-1 lead. Hollingsworth crushed a double to left field which scored three runs giving the Hurricane a 9-1 lead. Freshman Rylie Spell grounded out to the third baseman to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, East Carolina picked up two runs on two hits to reduce the Tulsa lead to 9-3.

The Hurricane picked up two more runs and two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Horner doubled to right field scoring both base runners to clinch the 11-3 Tulsa win.

The Hurricane will take on in-state rival Oklahoma State at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
