The Tulsa rowers captured a win in the 3rd Varsity 8+ race, but fell to Oklahoma in the Stone Family Cup on Saturday at the Devon Boathouse on the Oklahoma River in Oklahoma City.
"I thought our racing today was solid," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We had some good racing against a tough Oklahoma team, but we were able to push with them through the 1,000-meter mark. It was a good test for us and a good way for us to end our regular season. I really appreciate the Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation for accommodating us this weekend with a change in venue and for Oklahoma for making the switch."
Lauren Turner, Kristin Palilionis, Alexandra Griffith, Jules Soper, Elizabeth McCabe, Sarah Palilionis, Anna McHenry, Adrianna Catalanotto and Sam Barber raced the Golden Hurricane's 3rd Varsity 8+ to a top time of 7:35.06, more than four seconds faster than the Sooners.
"Obviously winning the 3rd Varsity 8+ was important and a really good race for them," Harris said. "I am proud of them for fighting through and pulling out the win."
In the Varsity 8+, TU posted a time of 7:15.02, just shy of OU's time of 7:13.77, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ turned in a time of 7:39.82, trailing Oklahoma by 18 seconds, the largest margin of victory for the Sooners on the day.
"The Varsity 8+ had a great race," Harris said. "Oklahoma got out on us from the start and that seemed to be the margin all the way down the course. OU did a good job of countering us and we have to find a way to do that before we head to conference in two weeks."
In the Varsity 4+, OU captured a time of 8:08.1, followed by TU at 8:15.4, and in the 2nd Varsity 4+ Oklahoma posted a top mark of 8:06.07, while Tulsa crossed the finish line with a time of 8:21.38 and the Hurricane's 3rd Varsity 4+ tallied a time of 9:02.44.
Tulsa returns to action in the American Athletic Conference Championship on May 14 in Sacramento, Calif.
