Tulsa Puts Together Solid Races Despite Bad Weather Conditions at Knecht Cup

4/9/2016 5:49:00 PM | Rowing

The Tulsa rowers put together six solid races before poor weather conditions forced the regatta to be suspended for the day at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, N.J.

"It was as bad weather wise as it could be," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "It was in the low 40's with a driving rain for a good portion of the day, and although we were able to get most of the races off, we did have to postpone some of the racing until tomorrow."

The Varsity 4+ turned in a time of 8:13.35 in Heat 1 and then a time of 8:42.34 in the Semifinal 1, for fourth-place finishes in both races to advance to the Petite Final on Sunday.  TU's 2nd Varsity 4+ tallied an impressive second-place time of 8:29.44 in Heat 3, including a nine-second win over conference foe UConn, and then had a time of 9:16.28 for a fifth-place finish in Semifinal 1 to also advance to the Petite Final tomorrow.

"In general the team handled the conditions pretty well," Harris said.  "I don't think we raced the Varsity 4+ as well as we could have in the Heat, but they had a much better race in the Semifinal.  I am excited about how our Fours performed today, but we will have to compete harder for a win in the Petite Finals tomorrow."

Tulsa's Varsity 8+ recorded a top time of 7:28.30 in Heat 5, topping second-place North Carolina by 11 seconds, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ was second in Heat 3 with a time of 7:38.40.  Both the Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ will race in the Semifinals tomorrow to earn a spot in the Finals, while the Lightweight 8+ will compete for the first time of the regatta in the Heats and Finals on Sunday.

"The 2nd Varsity 8+ had a solid heat and rowed well considering this is the first time we've put these lineups together," Harris said.  "They had good competition with North Carolina and were able to finish second, while the Varsity 8+ executed their race plan and were able to establish a rhythm down the course.  I am excited to see how both Eights do in the semifinals tomorrow against very good competition."
