MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tulsa softball team fell at Memphis, 5-2, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at the Memphis Softball Complex.
The Golden Hurricane fell to 29-17 overall and 6-9 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Tigers improved to 26-27 overall and 7-8 in league play. It was the first time Tulsa has lost a series to Memphis.
Tulsa tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning on left fielder Maddie Withee's two-run single, but Memphis scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to move ahead, 5-2.
Tulsa tallied five hits in the game, led by third baseman Maggie Withee's 2-for-3 performance. Catcher Catherine Horner doubled and shortstop Shelby Estocado added a single. Starter Caitlin Sill (16-9) absorbed the complete-game loss. Memphis tallied nine hits, and scored two unearned runs off two TU errors. Reliever Molly Smith (11-13) pitched the final 3.0 innings in relief and got the win for the Tigers.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, Maggie Withee led off with a single, and Horner doubled down the right field line. Two outs later, Maddie Withee singled to left, scoring both runners to tie the game at two apiece.
Memphis scored a run in the first and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Lindsey Stickrod hit an RBI single in the first inning to score Lindsay Crowdus. In the fifth, Regan Hadley scored on a throwing error off of Crowdus' base hit. In the bottom of the sixth, a single, a fielding error on a bunt, and a walk loaded the bases. Catcher Brittany Seale then hit an RBI single, and shortstop Kyler Trosclair hit a two-run single to make the score 5-2.
The Golden Hurricane plays host to No. 9 Oklahoma at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
