Tulsa Rowers Finish Second at 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship

The Tulsa rowers finished second at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. TU tallied 183 points, trailing UCF (213), but finishing ahead of Temple (149), Sacramento State (141), San Diego State (128), UConn (101) and SMU (48).
"We had very high expectations for today," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Our team raced well and didn't make any mistakes on the course, but we just didn't quite make our goal of winning the championship. Hats off to UCF because they did a great job."
The Golden Hurricane's 2nd Varsity 4+, which consisted of Elizabeth Natho, Abigail Elggren, Annie Martin, Stephanie Call and Lindsay Crute, took home a gold medal, turning in a time of 7:50.1 for a 3.3-second win over Sacramento State. TU also topped UCF (7:59.3), Temple (8:05.3), UConn (8:10.2) and San Diego State (8:11.0).
"I am certainly happy with the win in the 2nd Varsity 4+," Harris said. "They put together an absolutely magnificent race and I believe led from start to finish."
Tulsa finished second in three events, including the Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+. In the Four, TU tallied a time of 7:39.5, falling behind UCF by 4.3 seconds, while the Eight posted a time of 6:49.2, also behind UCF (6:40.7). In the 3V8+, Temple was first with a time of 7:09.3, followed by the Hurricane with a time of 7:14.4.
"The Varsity 4+ did a good job of fighting with UCF, but didn't have enough to counter their speed," Harris said. "In the Varsity 8+, UCF overpowered everyone, but we did a good job of keeping our poise in fighting for the second-place mark. I was also pleased with the 3V8's closing speed and ability to pull through boats. They are our youngest boat and they have come together the last few weeks under Coach Kerry Hassall."
TU earned a third-place mark in the 2nd Varsity 8+ in a time of 7:01.1, trailing UCF (6:50.3) and Sacramento State (6:58.2), while the 3rd Varsity 4+ finished fifth overall.
For their efforts this season, Jennifer Casson and Hannah Vissers were named to the American Athletic Conference all-conference first team, while Hannah Emnett and Marcia Vidaurri were second-team selections.
Tulsa will conclude the season at the IRA Lightweight National Championship, racing a Lightweight 2x and Lightweight 4+. The regatta will be held June 3-5 in West Windsor, N.J.
