Tournament play began on Thursday as the final 16 teams, both men and women, are in Tulsa for the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of The University of Tulsa. The women kicked off the tournament today (Thursday, May 19) with eight matches in the Round of 16. The Round of 16 for the men will take place on Friday.

Regional competition concluded late Sunday afternoon as the final match featured a men's second round contest that saw the No. 30-ranked SMU Mustangs, from the American Athletic Conference, upset the No. 8-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders with a 4-2 victory in Lubbock Texas.

The SMU win was one of four upsets on the men's side, including Mississippi State taking down No. 15 seed Illinois (4-0), Texas defeating #12 Texas A&M (4-3) and 17-time champion Stanford beating No. 14 Northwestern (4-3).

No. 1 seed and defending champion Virginia comes to Tulsa as the favorite with a 26-4 record, and looking to win their third title in the last four years. Virginia had little trouble in the first two rounds with a 4-0 win over Monmouth and a 4-1 victory against Penn State. Fellow ACC member, North Carolina, is the No. 2 seed and comes to Tulsa with a 27-4 record after decisive 4-0 weekend wins over College of Charleston and Tulane.

There will be some state of Oklahoma flavor to the team championships this year. Both the Oklahoma (17-10) and Oklahoma State (20-7) men will make their way down the turnpikes, as will the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The OU men, who have made it to the championship match in each of the last two seasons, come into the tournament as the No. 11 seed, while OSU is the No. 16 seed and will start off with the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers on Friday.

The remaining top-16 seeds for the men's championship are: #3 UCLA (24-2), #4 TCU (26-3), #5 Ohio State (32-2), #6 Wake Forest, #7 Georgia (22-4), #9 Florida (20-6), #10 Southern Cal (17-6), #13 California (17-6).

On the women's side, California comes into the championship as the No. 1 seed, but is ranked No. 2 in the latest ITA poll, while the Florida Gators are ranked No. 1 in the ITA national poll and is the tournament's No. 2 seeded team. Between them, the two teams have compiled a combined 44-3 record, with Cal holding a 21-1 season record and Florida coming in with a 23-2 mark.

Only two of the top-16 seeds didn't make it to Tulsa, instead two past champions made the breakthrough this weekend as 2007 champion Georgia Tech upset No. 13 South Carolina and two-time champion Texas upended No. 9 seed Duke.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls (26-4) enter the Round of 16 as the No. 12 seed and will face two-time NCAA Champion and the No. 5 seeded Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Thursday.

Seventeen-time national champion Stanford comes into this year's women's event as the No. 15 seed, while the remaining top-16 seeds joining these schools in Tulsa include: #3 North Carolina (31-2), #4 Ohio State (30-4), defending national champion and No. 6 seed Vanderbilt (21-5), #7 Miami (21-5), #8 Pepperdine (23-2), #10 Michigan (22-6), #11 Auburn (24-7), #14 Virginia (18-10) and #16 Texas Tech (25-5).

The 2016 event is the third NCAA Tennis Championship that has been played in Tulsa. The Case Tennis Center was also host site for the 2004 NCAA Men's Championship and the 2008 NCAA Men's & Women's Championships. In 2004, the Baylor men claimed the team title, while in 2008 Georgia defeated Texas 4-2 to win their latest of six national championships for the men. The 2008 women's title was won by UCLA with a 4-0 victory over Cal.
