The NCAA Women's Tennis Championship came down to a third set with the score tied 3-3, as Taylor Davidson clinched the 18th national title for Stanford with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory at the No. 2 singles position to defeat the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on The University of Tulsa campus.
The 15th-seed Stanford Cardinal (20-5) broke its own record of becoming the highest seed to win the NCAA Championship, as the Cardinal won the 2013 title as a No. 12 seed. Stanford Head Coach Lele Forood won her eighth national title as the Cardinal head coach.
OSU (29-5) was its usual self in doubles by capturing its 32nd doubles point out of 33 attempts this season. The Cowgirls won the doubles at No. 3 and No. 1. Stanford tied the score at one apiece when Krista Hardebeck, the only Cardinal to participate at the 2013 NCAA Championship, won 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.
Oklahoma State's Katarina Adamovic put the Cowgirls back ahead 2-1 when she claimed a straight set 6-4, 7-5 victory over Carol Zhao, while teammate Viktoria Luskova won her No. 3 match against Caroline Doyle 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 giving OSU a 3-1 lead. The Cardinal battled back to win the final three matches, all in three sets, including the freshmen duo of No. 5 Caroline Lampl and No. 6 Melissa Lord tying the score at 3-3, and leaving junior Taylor Davidson to clinch the victory.
Oklahoma State was making its first championship match appearance in school history.
