No. 1-seed Virginia won its second consecutive NCAA Men's Tennis Championship on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Lightning and rain forced the match to be moved indoors with a delayed start time of one hour to 7:00 p.m. It was Virginia's third NCAA crown in the last four years, and the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Cavaliers played in the championship match. Virginia became the 17th No. 1 seed since 1977 to win the national title, while Oklahoma was making its third consecutive finals appearance. Virginia finished the season with a 30-4 record, while Oklahoma had a 20-11 mark.
In a rematch of last year's title match, UVA jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 3 by Collin Altamirano and J.C. Aragone, 6-1, and the No. 1 position as the nation's fourth-ranked team of Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane pulled out a 7-5 decision.
UVA took a 2-0 lead when J.C. Aragone won his singles match at No. 5 by a 6-3, 6-4 score. Oklahoma's Andrew Harris claimed the first point for the Sooners with a 7-6, 6-0 win over the nation's 8th-ranked Ryan Shane, but quickly after, the Cavaliers went back ahead 3-1 when Thai-Son Kwiatkowski captured identical 6-4 victories in straight sets at the No. 3 position.
Henrik Wiersholm clinched the match victory for the Cavaliers with a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over Andre Biro for the 4-1 victory.
