The University of Tulsa women's basketball team announced the 13-game non-conference schedule, which features a potential eight games against 2016 postseason teams, five home contests, including games against Arkansas and the 2016 WNIT Champions South Dakota, and a trip to Albuquerque, N.M., for the UNM Thanksgiving Classic.
"This will be a challenging non-conference schedule, but one which will provide great opportunities for our young team," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "There is a great mix of new opponents such as UMKC and North Texas, along with teams like ORU and Saint Louis that we have played for a number of years. I think our fans will appreciate the quality of the competition."
All 14 of TU's potential non-conference opponents finished last year with double-digit wins, while eight teams played in the postseason. BYU, Kansas State and Oklahoma competed in the NCAA Championship; Arkansas State, Little Rock, Saint Louis and South Dakota played in the WNIT; and New Mexico participated in the WBI.
Tulsa tips off the season with a three-game road swing, including UMKC (Nov. 11), Kansas State (Nov. 14) and Oral Roberts (Nov. 17). The Kangaroos tallied 10 wins last season, while the Wildcats posted 19 victories and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship, and the Golden Eagles recorded 14 wins, 10 of which came in the Summit League. The Golden Hurricane has a 6-3 advantage in the series with UMKC, including a 62-57 win to start the 2009-10 campaign. KSU picked up their third victory over TU last season for a 3-0 advantage, while ORU also earned a win against Tulsa last year.
WNIT Champions South Dakota comes to town for the home opener on Nov. 20. The Coyotes totaled an impressive 32-6 mark, including a 15-1 record in the Summit League, last season. This will be the first meeting between TU and USD on the women's basketball court.
A trip to Albuquerque, N.M., for the UNM Thanksgiving Classic is on the slate for Nov. 25-26. Although the tournament pairings have not been announced, Tulsa will face two of the three, including host New Mexico, BYU and St. Joseph's. The BYU Cougars have the most impressive resume from last season, including 26 wins and a NCAA Tournament appearance, while the Lobos earned 17 wins and played in the WBI, and the Hawks tallied 14 wins a year ago.
Tulsa will return home to host Arkansas (Nov. 30) and North Texas (Dec. 3), before traveling to Arkansas State (Dec. 6) and Oklahoma (Dec. 11). The Sooners had 22 wins and played in the second round of the NCAA Championship, while the Red Wolves had 27 victories and played in the second round of the WNIT last season. The Razorbacks had 12 wins, while the Mean Green totaled 11 victories a year ago.
Saint Louis (Dec. 15) and Little Rock (Dec. 18) come to town before TU closes out the non-conference schedule at Indiana State (Dec. 21). The Billikens recorded 26 wins and advanced to the third round of the WNIT, while the Trojans had 20 victories and played in the first round of the WNIT, and the Sycamore had 13 wins last season.
