Basketball Will Face Stephen F. Austin in Diamond Head Classic Opener

TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa men's basketball team will open the 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic against Stephen F. Austin at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, it was announced today.

The tournament takes place at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. The Diamond Head Classic is an eight-team bracketed tournament that features 12 games over three days, and each team will play one game per day.

The game between the Golden Hurricane and Lumberjacks will be televised on ESPNU, as every game of the tournament will air on ESPN networks. Tulsa and SFA are joined in the tournament field by San Diego State, Southern Miss, San Francisco, Utah, Illinois State and host Hawai'i.

The Tulsa-SFA winner will face the winner of San Diego State and Southern Miss at 3:30 p.m. CT on Friday, Dec. 23 on ESPN2. The consolation and championship games will take place on Sunday, Dec. 25, culminating with the championship game at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Tulsa is one of five schools in the tournament to appear in the 2015-16 postseason, including Hawai'i, Stephen F. Austin, Utah and San Diego State. Hawai'i, Stephen F. Austin and Utah joined TU in the NCAA Tournament field, while San Diego State played in the NIT.

Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin have met twice in basketball, most recently in 2012-13 when SFA won 57-41 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Lumberjacks, which lead the series 2-0, have played in the NCAA Tournament each of the last three years.

Among the other schools participating in the Diamond Head Classic, Tulsa leads all-time series against San Diego State (6-1), Southern Miss (7-5), San Francisco (2-0) and Illinois State (16-15). Hawai'i (11-9) and Utah (4-2) hold narrow series leads over TU.
