TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa sophomore men's tennis player Majed Kilani reached the quarterfinal round in back-to-back Egypt Futures events held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, July 11 through July 24.
Kilani started his back-to-back quarterfinal runs at the Egypt F15 Futures on July 11 as the fifth-seed, earning a first round win over Gustavo Guerses in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. After falling down a set to Antonio Zucca in his second round matchup, Kilani bounced back to take the next two sets by a score of 6-1. Kilani's first tournament run was ended in the quarterfinal, as he fell to Jarmere Jenkins, 6-2, 6-2.
Kilani began the Egypt F16 Futures as the seventh-seed, but found himself down one set to Olexiy Kolisnyk in the opening round of the tournament on July 18. Kilani responded with set wins of 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the round of 32. The matchup that sent him to the finals began the same way before Kilani won the tiebreak in the second set on his way to a 5-0 third set lead before opponent Oleg Khotkov retired from the match. Kilani needed yet another tiebreak second set triumph to keep his hopes alive in the quarterfinal battle against Alan Gadjiev, winning the set 7-6 (5) before eventually dropping the third, 6-2.
Last season, Kilani compiled a 16-7 record for the Hurricane in his first collegiate season.
