Tulsa’s Montgomery Pleased with Team’s Progress and Depth

Tulsa was back on the practice field Wednesday for two practice sessions, as the Golden Hurricane concentrated on special teams during the afternoon workout. The 120-minute morning session was the 14th practice of camp.

Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery is pleased with his team's progress this preseason, including the development of depth on the roster.

"I think we've made great progress," said Montgomery. "Our installation has gone through a lot quicker than anticipated because guys have been able to handle it. Today, we had great competition and we had great weather,"

"We have had some mental breakdowns that we have to clean up especially offensively. Most of those are just young guys who are still trying to learn and you get to the midpoint of camp and the grind is on them. Being mentally sharp as you go through the practice that we go through is tough to do, but those guys are growing and learning. We'll continue to get better as we go," added Montgomery.

Montgomery has been pleased with how far the depth on this roster has developed since a year ago.

"I think our depth has gotten so much better just in a year. I think we've done a good job of developing those guys. Some of those guys are really pushing for playing time. A bunch of our starters return, and they feel good about what they're doing, but they feel that the young guys are biting at their heels and that's keeping them on their toes," said Montgomery.

The goal of Montgomery and his coaching staff during the preseason is to get the best 11 players on the field. "Just like I've told guys at the start of every season, my job is to put the best 11 out there," said Montgomery "So, whether you're a starter or not, at this point it doesn't matter. It's about finding the best 11. So if that backup is pushing you, you better hold onto your job or he's going to get it."

Tulsa will take off from the practice field on Thursday for the Annual Tulsa Golden Hurricane Football Kickoff Luncheon presented by ONEOK and ONE Gas, where the new adidas Golden Hurricane uniform will be unveiled.
