A Look at the Running Backs

"I've been really pleased with the running backs. I think the running back position has been a bright spot to our camp. It has probably exceeded my expectations," said Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery.
Â
Returning starter D'Angelo Brewer (5-9, 185), who gained 837 yards and scored six touchdowns a year ago, has had an impressive fall camp. Senior James Flanders (5-10, 203) battled nagging injuries last year, but has been healthy during fall camp and looks reminiscent of his 2014 form when he rushed for 456 yards.
Â
"D'Angelo and James are both playing well this camp," said Montgomery. Rowdy Simon (5-8, 202) and Javon Thomas (6-2, 223) "have done a good job in camp," Montgomery added. "I think Javon has had one of his better camps this preseason."
Â
Simon, a walk-on, played on special teams and saw limited action at running back a year ago. While red-shirt freshman Thomas will be in his first year after sitting out the 2015 season, sophomore Ramadi Warren will miss the 2016 campaign.
Â
Tulsa has added Oklahoma State graduate transfer Raymond Taylor (5-8, 195) to the mix of running backs. Taylor, who gained 297 yards with the Cowboys last year, missed most of the first two weeks of camp. "Raymond had his first day in pads on Friday and he showed some good signs," said Montgomery
Â
In addition, depth also comes from a pair of freshmen, Corey Taylor II (5-10, 200) and Matthew Harvey (6-0, 205).
