A Look at the Tight Ends

It may not be the glamorous position in college football as it has become in the NFL, but the tight end position will be instrumental in the success of the Tulsa offense. Tulsa tight ends accounted for only four receptions for the Hurricane in 2015, but that doesn't define the importance the position brings to the offensive unit.
Â
"For what we do offensively, really our tight ends are key," said Head Coach Philip Montgomery. "They bring a level of toughness, a nastiness that you have to have to play this game."
Â
"They're also going to be used in situations in the passing game and we expanded on that a little bit from last year. I think we'll continue to keep developing that side of it," added Montgomery.
Â
Two returning letterwinners return to the position for the 2016 campaign. Chris Minter (6-3, 247) returns after playing in 11 games as a true freshman a year ago, and junior Rob Riederer (6-0, 230), a key special teams performer and who was also used in blocking situations last season has continued to show that he is a solid performer.
Â
Sophomore Payton Prince (6-4, 257) will battle for playing time, while true freshman David Fitzwater (6-4, 230) adds depth.
Â
"I really like where our tight ends are at right now. Chris, obviously, is our starter and Rob had such a great spring and it has continued into fall camp. Payton has gotten a lot better, and I think David is going to have a chance to be a really special player. He's got great intelligence and good hands, but he's a tough guy," said Montgomery.
Â
"I like where we're at with the tight ends. We just have to keep working and getting better," Montgomery concluded.
