TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa volleyball team was swept by South Dakota in the final match of the Hurricane Classic at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday afternoon.
Tulsa (2-1) used a 4-0 early run in the first set to gain a 7-5 advantage before South Dakota (2-1) rattled off five straight to go ahead 12-8. Sophomore Rachel Moore brought the Hurricane within one with one of her four kills on the day at 16-15 before the Coyotes pulled away for a 25-21 set win.
A tightly contested second set start, TU grabbed a two point lead after a Moore kill and USD error at 10-8. Five straight Coyote points off of Brittany Jessen digs put USD ahead 19-15 on their way to winning the second set 25-19. Jessen had 30 assists to go along with 17 digs for the Coyotes.
TU senior Erica Bohannon recorded four kills over seven points after a timeout to bring the Hurricane within one at 15-14 before USD pulled away to secure a 25-19 set win and match sweep. Bohannon led all players with 14 kills on the day.
"South Dakota is an extremely good volleyball team," said TU Head Coach Ryan Wills. "I think one of the best players in the gym the whole weekend was their setter. She moves the ball around and creates problems for you offensively, because she can set the ball and also score points herself. They can play really good volleyball. We didn't come in with the energy and focus we needed. We had an emotional night last night, and we didn't handle it the right way, and when you play a good volleyball team, that's the result you're going to get."
The Hurricane completed the weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating Incarnate Word, 3-1, and Alabama, 3-2, on Friday evening.
Tulsa will continue non-conference tournament play on Friday, Sept. 2 when they travel to San Marcos, Texas for the Texas State Invitational. Their first match is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. against Kennesaw State.
