Hurricane Defeat Northwestern State at the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational, 3-1

TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa Volleyball team moved to 2-0 at the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 win over Northwestern State on Saturday afternoon. Tulsa (10-1 overall) held the Demons to just a .052 attacking-percentage in the match while TU hit .202.
Tulsa was dominant early in the first set for the second consecutive match as they jumped out to a 12-3 lead after four service aces from Mariah Pardo. Back-to-back Jaime Rahilly kills put the Hurricane ahead by 10, 19-9. After a Rachel Moore kill, Northwestern State rattled off three straight points to bring the set to 23-14, but Moore and Trinity Alualu finished it off with consecutive kills, 25-15. Alualu finished the afternoon with 10 kills.
A back-and-forth second set found TU behind 5-6 before Tulsa took advantage of two Demon attacking errors while Alualu pitched in two successful attacks to grab a 9-6 lead. Northwestern State responded and took their biggest lead of the set after a TU attacking error at 13-10. Erica Bohannon tallied two straight kills to bring Tulsa back within one at 14-13 before TU eventually tied the match at 20-20 after an opposing error. Bohannon came back with another attack to give the Hurricane their first lead since 9-8, 23-22, before Moore eventually finished the set off at 25-22.
The Hurricane led 7-4 in the third set before Northwestern State scored four straight to take an 8-7 lead. Reeve put TU back ahead with a kill at 10-9 before Brooke Berryhill pitched in an ace as Tulsa grabbed a 13-9 advantage. The Demons went on a 7-0 run to gain a 18-14 advantage and never looked back on their way to taking the set 25-22.
Tulsa responded with a strong performance early in the fourth set, jumping out to an 11-5 lead with the help of three early Moore kills. Northwestern State responded with a quick run to cut the TU lead down to three at 12-9. Tulsa responded as Reeve and Rahilly recorded consecutive kills before a Demon error forced the visitors into calling a timeout as the Hurricane went ahead 15-9. Tulsa steadily extended their lead as Reeve and Rahilly put the Hurricane up 24-14 on their way to winning the set, 25-15.
Reeve led the TU attack with 12 kills while pitching in 17 digs for a Tulsa squad that totaled 96 in the match. Berryhill anchored the defense with 22 digs while freshmen Taylor Horsfall added 17.
The Hurricane will wrap up non-conference tournament play this evening when they take on Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. in the final match of the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational. Tulsa will look to go unbeaten for the third straight weekend.
