Tulsa Volleyball Takes Final Two Sets to Defeat Kennesaw State, 3-1

9/2/2016 3:27:00 PM | Volleyball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Tulsa Volleyball team won the final two sets on Friday afternoon to defeat Kennesaw State at the Creeds and Crests Classic, 3-1. The Hurricane (3-1 overally) outscored the Owls 18-5 in the third set to break the 1-1 tie in the only set that was not decided by two points.

Tulsa found themselves down early after a sloppy start in the first set, eventually falling behind 19-12 before putting together a 13-4 set-clinching run. After a kill from Emily Thorson, senior Trinity Alualu racked up three straight service aces to force a Kennesaw State (1-4 overall) timeout. Kills from Erica Bohannon and Alualu brought the Hurricane within one before Bohannon followed with a service ace and a subsequent KSU attacking error secured a TU set win, 25-23.

Role reversal in the second set found Tulsa ahead 12-5 after a Rebecca Reeve kill from freshman Mariah Pardo before eventually going on to take a 19-13 lead. Kennesaw State's Madeline Johnson knotted things up at 21-21 prior to the Owls going ahead 23-21. A kill from Reeve and a KSU attacking error deadlocked the set at 23-23, but the Hurricane could not recover as they fell in the set, 25-23.

Jaime Rahilly provided the Tulsa attack with a boost in the third set, tallying four straight kills to put the Hurricane ahead 11-7 while starting a run of seven straight points. Rahilly finished with nine kills to go along with six blocks. TU continued their success in the set, outscoring the Owls 18-5 to close the set out, 25-12.

The fourth set came down to the wire as kills from Reeve and Bohannon put TU ahead 20-19 in a back-and-forth conclusion to the match. Alualu put the Hurricane ahead by two with a kill late before the set got tied up at 24-24. KSU's Anaiah Boyer put her team ahead by a point with her match-leading 17th kill prior to an Owl attacking error knotted the set once again. An attacking error from KSU sealed the set and match for TU after Reeve's final kill of the evening gave them a lead.

Bohannon and Reeve paced the TU attack with 12 kills a piece for a Tulsa squad that hit .182 over the four-set span. Defensively, Brooke Berryhill led the way with a game-high 25 digs while Reeve added 15 to complete her double-double. Ashton Anderson tallied 22 assists while Pardo added 17.

The Hurricane will be back in action at the Creeds and Crests Classic later today when they take on Stephen F. Austin.
