Track and Field Earns 14 Top-Five Finishes at Arkansas Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Tulsa Track and Field team ran their first meet of 2017 as they competed at the Arkansas Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday evening. The women and men both totaled six and eight top-five finishes on the evening, respectively, including a strong showing by the women in the 600-meters and 1,000-meters. The Tulsa men took second and third in the 600-meters and earned a medal in the field events as freshman Aleks Rapp took first in the weight throw for the second straight meet.

Rapp's 19.39m (63-7.5) toss was the second-best in school history, second to the freshman's mark of 64-7.75 that he set at the Crimson and Gold Invitational.

In the men's 600-meters, Grey Howard and Robert Tully ran second and third with times of 1:19.76 and 1:19.89 respectively, giving them the second and third fastest times in TU history in the indoor event.

The mile run proved to be another strong event for the Hurricane as they placed five runners in the top-10, highlighted by Ben Preisner's fourth-place run of 4:08.69 followed by Adam Roderique's time of 4:09.55, which placed him fifth.

Bailey Stewart ran the sixth fastest indoor time at TU in the 400-meter dash, taking fourth with a run of 48.39.

The women's squad recorded two runner-up finishes on the evening as Allison Bailey ran second with a time of 1:34.72 in the 600-meter. Sabrina Monsees picked up the other second-place finish for the Hurricane as she ran a time of 2:55.99 in the 1,000-meters.

Freshman Aaliyah Birmingham won her heat and finished fourth overall in a fast 200-meter event with a time of 24.82. Candalyn Lyons finished seventh and Quin Patterson placed 11^th in the event.

Stacie Taylor led the way for Tulsa in the mile run with a time of 4:56.87 as she finished seventh followed by Avery Culpepper in ninth.

Baylor Reese finished fourth with a toss of 13.84m (45-5) in the weight throw, the only TU field event on the women's side of the evening.

The women's team capped off the evening with a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay with a run of 3:51.86 while the men took sixth in the event with a run of 3:16.62.

"We think we had a good opening meet," said Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley. "I thought we got a really good effort from the team coming off Christmas break."

The Hurricane will return to the track when they head to Manhattan, Kan. for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational at Kansas State University on Jan. 20-21.
