LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Golden Hurricane women's tennis team was in action on Friday as it participated in the second day of the ITA Regionals hosted by Kansas. In doubles action, Ksenia Laskutova and Martha Matoula defeated Iowa's Anastasia Reimchen and Montana Crawford, 8-2. In singles play, Ksenia Laskutova, Martha Matoula, Vera Ploner and Martina Okalova all advanced to the third round. Okalova advanced to the round of 16.
In the second round of the singles draw, the No. 4 seed Ksenia Laskutova only surrendered three games in her match against Missouri's Serena Nash. Laskutova won the first set, 6-1, and the second set, 6-2. Martha Matoula, the No. 14 seed, needed just two sets for a second round victory against Drake's Elizaveta Petushkova, 6-2 and 6-1. The No. 15 seed Martina Okalova defeated Wichita State's Marta Bellucco in two sets. Okalova only surrendered two games in the match, as she won 6-1 and 6-1. Vera Ploner had success in her second round matchup, as she knocked off Amina Ismail of Missouri in three sets. Ploner won the first set, 7-5. After Ismail won the second set 6-1, Ploner bounced back to take the final set, 6-2. One of the No. 17 seeds, Paula Del Cueto Castiallo of Nebraska, defeated Tamara Kupkova in two sets, 6-4 and 7-5. Another No. 17 seed, Rosanna Maffei of Kansas State knocked off Alexandrina Chinikova in two sets, 6-3 and 6-1. The No. 8 seed from Wichita State, Fatima Bizhukova defeated Shura Poppe, 6-3 and 6-1.
In the third round of the singles draw, No. 15 seed Okalova faced Arkansas' Jacqueline Carr. Okalova won the first set, 6-2, before sweeping the second set, 6-0. Okalova advanced to the round of 16. No.4 seed Laskutova faced Natsuho Arakawa of Arkansas in the third round. Arakawa knocked off Laskutova in two sets, 7-5 and 6-4. Ploner faced the No. 16 seed Janet Koch, where Ploner won the first set, 6-2. Koch went on to win the final two sets, 6-1 and 7-5, to win the match. Matoula faced Ines Mesquita from Kansas State in the third round. Matuola took the first set 6-3, Mesquita won the final two sets, 7-5 and 6-2, to win the match.
In the doubles draw, the No. 8 seed tandem of Laskutova and Matoula defeated Anastasia Reimchen and Montana Crawford of Iowa, 8-2. The No. 2 seed team of Vladica Babic and Sofia of OSU knocked off Poppe and Kupkova, 8-4. Okalova and Ploner fell to the No. 7 seed, Mia Jurisc and Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas, 8-3.
The Golden Hurricane returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 21, to compete in the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles. In doubles, the No. 8 seed Laskutova and Matoula will face the No. 9 seed from Kansas Tatiana Nikolaeva and Despoina Vogasari. In the round of 16 in singles, Okalova will play against the No. 1 seed from Arkansas, Ana Oparenovic. Times to be announced later.
